Stamford School – Lord Coe opens new sports centre

On Friday 30th November, the Stamford Endowed Schools were honoured to welcome Rt. Hon. Lord Coe to officially Lord Coe Stamfordopen their new Sports Centre and Memorial Pool.

Before Lord Coe presided over the opening ceremony, he had a tour of the £6.1m facility, which includes a 25m swimming pool and a fitness suite.

Lord Coe was greeted by a showcase of sport, as students from across the three Schools participated in displays of hockey, tennis, netball, squash, cricket, swimming, fencing, gymnastics, rugby and football.

He commented on how impressed he was by the pupils’ dedication to sport, the variety available and the facilities at hand.

After the sports display, staff, parents and 1400 students were positioned on the rugby pitches before Lord Coe delivered a speech from the Sports Centre balcony above.

His speech highlighted the importance of continuing the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic Games and remarked upon Stamford’s connection to the Olympics through Lord Burghley.

Principal of the Stamford Endowed Schools, Stephen Roberts, said: “This was a memorable day for all involved and we are honoured to have had a true sporting icon open our superb facility. The Sports Centre is a valuable addition to the Sports facilities at our schools and will greatly enhance the students’ curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. Many pupils had the chance to speak to Lord Coe and I think everyone feels inspired to continue the Olympic Legacy after a fantastic year of sport.”
