Stonar was awarded the Artsmark last week by the Arts Council, which recognises the rich and high quality provision of arts education at the school.

To qualify for the Artsmark the school had to demonstrate a consistently high level of provision in all the arts subjects – art and photography, music, drama, dance and creative writing both inside and outside the curriculum as well as a good take up by students of all ages. The school was able to show that provision is of an excellent quality and includes partnerships with visiting artists as well as outreach to the broader community.

Stonar gave detailed written information about its provision, including feedback from staff and students and an external assessor visited the school.

Dr Sally Divall, Assistant Head Curriculum commented, “The Arts are powerful forms of communication that bring together intellect and feeling and promote personal expression, reflection and emotional development. We believe that the Arts are a fundamental part of education and at Stonar all pupils take part in various disciplines through the taught curriculum, and the extensive and lively programme of extra-curricular opportunities including plays and concerts and regular house competitions.”

Stonar has recently invested in superb new facilities for the arts including refurbished art rooms, a dark room, kiln and theatre as well as dedicated music and practice rooms and a dance studio. In 2011 A level students secured places at leading art colleges including Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
