Stonyhurst CCF’s this week planted 350 saplings on Sir Simon Towneley’s Cliviger Estate as part of their continuee7c526a0e70c11e68521d7153d914d87[1]d association with the Woodland Trust and Operation Reflect.

On Wednesday 26th January 2 platoons from Junior Company (Grammar,Year 10) were invited by Sir Simon Towneley KCVO to plant 350 young saplings on his Cliviger estate.  This planted area will be known as Yeomanry Wood.   This exercise continues the Stonyhurst CCF’s association with the Woodland Trust and Operation Reflect, which was set up in 2014 in commemoration of the First World War to remember the sacrifices made by our forebears, as they fought to protect the freedom and values that we enjoy today.  As part of this commemoration her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Stonyhurst in Sept 2014 to plant an oak sapling.

Lt Col. Andrew Barber, Contingent Commander of the Stonyhurst CCF, said: “The 42 cadets worked extremely hard, and with great efficiency planting 350 trees in just 40 minutes.”

The cadets were joined by the acting Col. The Hon. Ralph Assheton ( DLOY).  Also present were Cosima Towneley, daughter of Sir Simon; Mr Tom Mansion (OS 01) Sir Simon’s agent; Susannah Pick from the charted surveyors Ingham and Yorke; and head gardener Damien Birkett. The trees were sourced by the Woodland Trust.
