Student fencers set sights on national competition

fencing_mount_st_marys_collegeMount St Mary’s College, an independent school located in Spinkhill, Sheffield, have four students entering the prestigious British competition after winning three medals at the Yorkshire Youth Championships.

Isobel Mulkern, 16, who boards the college, won bronze in the Girls Under 16 Foil, while the Boys Under 18 Sabre category was dominated by Mount St Mary’s College, with Joshua Li, 17 winning the silver medal and Amer Qaiyum coming away with the bronze medal in the same category.

Patrick Shaw successfully battled to win fifth place in the Boys Under 12 Foil out of 29 entrants also securing a place at the British Youth Fencing Finals.

Mr Stephen Jenkins, Mount fencing master, said: “We delighted that four of our fencers are in the prestigious British Youth Fencing Finals. All of our fencers showed fantastic courage in the face of determined opposition, living up to the motto of the Mount Fencing Club: ‘Nunquam Desistere, Nunquam Dedere’ translating, Never Give Up, Never Surrender’”.

Fifteen pupils from the college took part in the championships with a total of 126 students competing overall from across the UK in categories including Epee, Foil and Sabre fencing.

The British Youth Fencing Finals will take place at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield from April 30 – May 1 2011.
