The choir were magnificent!….So wrote the Precentor of Exeter Cathedral to Choirmaster David Bridges following taunton school exeter catghedralthe Senior School Chapel Choir visit to sing Evensong in the Cathedral last Wednesday.

The Organist for the Service was Old Tauntonian Ed Jenkins (Evans 1995). Ed was taught the Organ by David, became Organ Scholar at Exeter Cathedral and is now Director of Music at Wycliffe College, Gloucestershire.

The Service included the first performance of music that Mr Bridges had specially written for the Chapel Choir in 2008.

“It’s the first opportunity the Choir have had to perform the music, which includes a setting of the Lord’s Prayer, and it was a delight to hear them sing it so well.

"Although the Voluntary Choir at Wells Cathedral has performed it on a few occasions when I have been playing at Evensong for them in the Cathedral, I was delighted to hear it sung by the people for whom it was written!.”

The Service also included a performance of The Taunton School Anthem by Howard Goodall, a specially taunton school exeter cathedralcommissioned piece for the Chapel Choir which received its first performance last October with Mr Goodall conducting.

Following the Service there was a Buffet Reception in the Chapter House attended by parents, Old Tauntonians and the Choristers themselves.

Just before ½ term, the Chapel Choir spent two days with a professional recording company, recording a selection of music in the School Chapel. Further details about how to buy a copy of this excellent recording will be revealed within the next few weeks.

The Chapel Choir has been working exceptionally hard over the past few weeks and I am very proud them. Together with their recording due to be released shortly, the icing on the cake is that they have been invited back to sing another Service Exeter Cathedral. I hope it will be the first of many occasions!
