On Thursday 28th February Taunton School International took part in the annual Taunton School boy’s house Taunton International schoolhockey competition.

The boys had a good training session in the morning and they were all really excited about heading out to the competition in the afternoon.

They were first on in the competition and took a bit of time to get into the match but they all stuck to their developed and impressive basic skills.

The team was anchored by Matthieu and Gerald who were getting the ball in good space and driving towards the goal but the oppositions defence kept them and the attackers quiet for lots of the match.

At the other end of the pitch, our defence stood strong and performed very well not letting anything get through them. The game ended 0-0 which was a fair result, but we showed lots of promising signs to work upon in the next game.

After a short break, we were back on but playing the strongest team, so the boys were a little nervous. We started very well and Mark, Nico and Roman were all impressive in attack but we just couldn’t manage to get the ball into the goal.

As the game went on, the opposition became stronger and stronger, so much so that our defence couldn’t contain their speed, good running and ferocious shots.

We went down by two goals but continued to battle on with Felix trying everything he could to carve out goal opportunities, albeit unsuccessfully! After the game the players were a bit disappointed but after a good rest they were ready for their next game.

The next game started with real enthusiasm and the TSI boys’ played really positively from the very beginning. Our attack was making very knowledgeable runs off the ball, especially Pierre, Javi and Charles. They were making a lot more opportunities than before and helped the midfield find those passes.

It was a very close game with lots of battles going on in the midfield, but we stayed calm and near the end of the game Nico scored a classy goal to win us the match. As the whistle was blown for the end of the match the boys came off jubilant and really pleased with their win.

As the boys went on for the final match they knew they needed to give the match everything if they were going to come out with a good result in the competition. They did just that with Matthieu, Gerald and Felix controlling the game from the midfield, with impressive dribbling and quick passing which made getting the ball up to the attack a lot easier that in previous games.

The game continued like this for a while before we scored. The team were looking really good and everyone was enjoying the match. As we relaxed knowing that we would most probably win, our defence was brought into action, but they were fantastic too.

Chai, Michael, Francesco, Aibar, Nikolay and William all played brilliantly and made sure nothing came through the defence. Also Alex the goalkeeper performed outstandingly, commanding the goal at short and long corners.

Taunton School International did really well and finished 2nd place overall, a fantastic performance and well deserved. A big thank you must go to Mr Jessop, Mr House and Mr Armstrong for all their hard work throughout the term and their coaching during the competition.
