The weather was fantastic (if a little windy) and the Somerset Earth Science Centre provided a beautiful and Taunton International Schoolinformative base for their studies.

As well as learning about the quarrying process and the uses of limestone, they looked at the environmental impact of quarrying.

Visiting the working quarry in high visibility jackets and hard hats, we saw dumper trucks which can carry 100 tonnes of rock.

We also saw massive machines to crush the extracted limestone and the control room that oversaw the whole operation.

We were lucky enough to watch (and hear!) an explosion that released 90,000 tonnes of limestone from the quarry. This fun day out is the start of next term’s classroom investigation into quarrying.
