Taunton School pupils have recently taken to the swimming pool for two charity events.

Swimmers from the preparatory school swam as many lengths of the school pool as they could in 30 minutes to raise money for the charity Holiday for Heroes. They aimed to match the 41 mile distance they will be swimming around the island of Jersey this summer, which they exceeded by swimming a combined 156 miles.

Hamish McCarthy, teacher and head of the Long Distance Swim Club, said: “I am so proud of the boys and girls, the youngsters especially, as all fully embraced the challenge. Few stopped, none wavered and all gave a superb effort. It is clearly evident that swimming, both in the open water and pool, continues to be a significant strength of Taunton Preparatory School.”

The younger pupils in the Pre-Preparatory School took part in the Jemima Layzell Trust’s ‘Splash for Cash’ event, raising over £350 for the brain research and organ donation charity. Jemima Layzell was a former pupil at the school who died in 2012 from a brain aneurysm. She helped eight different people through organ donation – the highest number on record.
