WAVING THE FLAG FOR MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The outstanding GCSE Language grades at The Royal High School, Bath this year speak volumes for the school’s expertise in, and passion for, Modern Foreign Languages. The statistics buck the trend, which has seen MFL studies gradually declining in recent years.

Mandarin tops the ratings at The Royal High School Bath as all 13 girls who entered the subject (as non-native speakers) achieve an A* grade.

Parli Italiano? It seems that our girls do, perfectly, as in Italian, an accelerated GCSE for girls who have opted to take two languages and which is completed, ab initio, in just one year, 10 out of the 11 girls achieved an A* (three girls achieving 100% on their examination) and the other an A.

Italian teacher, Vincente Roca-Gisbert is delighted. “These girls have worked exceptionally hard this year and deserve their acclaim. To be able to achieve these high marks is fabulous, but for them to now embrace both the language and the culture, is very important and is a gift which will stay with them forever.”

Kymberlie Aloni also embodies our love of languages and our exceptional results by achieving 12 A* including A* in Italian, Spanish, French, Latin and Hebrew. The 10 girls who took Latin all achieved A*/B grades and are spearheading renewed interest in the subject, particularly alongside studies in Classical Civilisation.

“Exceptional achievements all round this year”, enthuses Rebecca Dougall Dougall, Head, “we are very proud, especially with over 30 girls achieving 10 or more A*/A grades including stellar performances from Stephanie James and Gabrielle Payton both with 11 A* grades. Congratulations to them all.”

More than half the girls achieved A* in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, with a similar amount achieving A* in Maths. With 92% of the girls in total achieving A*/B grades across all disciplines there has been real strength in depth and it has been a hugely successful year.
