The achievements of this year’s A Level students at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, have been praised by the new Headmaster, Mr James Lockwood,

“With an overall 99.7% pass rate and 83.4% A* to C grades, I am confident that our pupils will gain places at a University of their choice despite the increased competition this year. Nearly a third of grades awarded were A*s or As and 13 pupils gained impressive three A grades or above.

Royal Hospital School Zad twins success at A levelTwo pupils in particular performed outstandingly well; Olga Zadvorna and her twin brother Anatolii who between them gained 5A*s and 4 As. Both joined the School as boarders into the Sixth Form from Ukraine and not only did they have to cope with the rigours of their academic studies but also with grasping the English language.
Olga will be going to Oxford University to study Physics and Anatolii to Bristol to study Computer Science

More locally, Ernest Appleby from Woodbridge achieved A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and an A in Spanish. As well as studying for his A Levels, Ernest took on increased responsibilities as a School Prefect and he gained his Grade 8 in the clarinet having never picked up an instrument before joining the Royal Hospital School! He will be going to Warwick University to study Mathematics next year.

Richard Pooley from Holbrook gained an A* in History, A in Politics and A in Religious Studies. He has made the very most of his time at the School through his involvement in sport, the combined cadet force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the debating society, his regular contributions to the student newspaper and his positions as Head of the Sixth Form House and Head of the Corps of Drums. Richard’s true potential has been unlocked by a committed and supportive group of teaching staff and he has repaid the time and effort invested in him by making the very most of all the opportunities presented. As a result, he was awarded a coveted Army Scholarship and his enhanced UCAS application helped him gain a place at York University to read History.

I am delighted with what all our students have achieved; both in their A Level examinations and in terms of the life experiences they have gained here at the Royal Hospital School. Our aim is not only to unlock the full academic potential of each individual but also to encourage pupils to discover themselves, develop a passion and make the very most of the opportunities presented to them. This is what helps to produce happy, rounded, grounded young people who live balanced and full lives.”
