Haileybury pupils are celebrating after achieving an average point score of 39 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), placing them well above the international average.

This year, Haileybury secured an impressive average point score of 39, making the school one of the best achieving UK schools in the IBDP, highlighting the strength and resilience of pupils during the pandemic.

Pupils are celebrating their results, with many securing top places at prestigious universities across the world. Three of Haileybury’s pupils have been awarded the ultimate top mark of 45 points, placing them in the top 1% in the world.

In addition, more than 40% of Haileybury pupils achieved 40 points or higher (the equivalent of 4 A* grades or better at A level) and a third of pupils were awarded bilingual diplomas.

Individual student successes include:

  • Guido, Sitara and Justus all achieved the maximum mark of 45 points.
  • Jack, Emilie and Mahaut all scored an exceptional 44 points, with Jack and Emilie now moving on to study at Cambridge and Oxford, respectively.
  • Federico, Sola, Marco, Magnolia and Willem scored 43 points (the equivalent of 4 A* and one A grade at A level).

Haileybury provides the IBDP as it is an internationally renowned programme and designed to prepare pupils for university. Pupils take six subjects, comprising a maths subject, two languages, a humanities subject, a science, and a sixth subject of their choice. Pupils also complete a Theory of Knowledge course, an extended essay and 150 hours of non-academic activity such as sport or volunteering. Due to Covid-19, this year’s results were based on student work, including coursework, reflecting the incredible hard work and efforts of pupils throughout the pandemic.

Martin Collier, The Master at Haileybury, said:

“These are an outstanding set of IBDP results. Given the circumstances of the last 16 months, all of the pupils deserve credit for their efforts. To complete Individual Assignments to such a high standard in a period that included two lockdowns is quite extraordinary.

“The statistics confirm that Haileybury is one of the very best IBDP schools in the UK. Above all else, we are delighted that the hard work and dedication of our IBDP pupils has paid off. We are very proud of them and grateful to their teachers who have served them so very well.”

Speaking on their success, Haileybury pupil, Sitara, said:

“Given the unpredictable nature of this year, I wasn’t sure what to expect, so I am super happy to have received a full score – it honestly doesn’t feel real! I’m on my way to San Francisco to study psychology and integrated humanities and The University of California, Berkeley; I am extremely excited for this next chapter.”

Haileybury student, Justus, said:

“I am very, very happy with my result and it feels amazing to be able to leave Haileybury with such a great achievement. I am planning on completing a three-year Bachelor program in International Business Administration in Germany at the Otto Beisheim School of Management.”

Haileybury student, Guido, said:

“Succeeding in the IB is no easy feat. However, a consistent work rate throughout the two years enables you to put yourself into the best possible position to achieve a good result in the diploma. Be a curious and savvy learner; take every opportunity to improve yourselves as students and people.”
