There were whizz and whistles galore as Trent College prepared for Bonfire Night with a captivating chemistry of fireworks demonstration from top explosives chemistry expert Professor Jackie Akhavan.

Dubbed ‘Pretty, Pretty, Bang, Bang’, Trent College students enjoyed two hour-long presentations from Cranfield University’s Prof. Akhavan as she safely demonstrated upside down rockets illustrating the power of thrust, a ‘secret’ strobe firework that will never go on public sale, gunpowder that didn’t go bang and contained detonations that definitely did!

Prof. Akhavan’s visit was part of Trent College’s innovative Whole School Programme, which aims to introduce a range of diverse external speakers to address students on a variety of topics to stimulate and inspire them while providing them with a broader view and a greater understanding of the world of politics, the arts, science, business and the media.

Among the other guest speakers to have already lectured at Trent College this term include former First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Sir Jonathan Band GCB DL, and inspirational rugby figure Matt Hampson, who after being paralysed in a scrum accident is now coaching and writing about rugby for his local newspaper in Leicester.
