Trent College Independent schoolTrent College, the flourishing co-educational, HMC independent day and boarding school bordering Nottingham and Derby today launches a major new scholarship programme to help fund places for talented children who would otherwise be unable to experience the unique benefits of a Trent College education.

The ‘Devonshire Scholarships’, named after the school’s President the Duke of Devonshire, focusses on the promotion and attainment of academic, sport, music, drama and art excellence and the means-tested scholarships could account for up to 75 per cent of fees for successful applicants.

The new scheme is open to students of any age who are not currently studying at Trent College and the first beneficiaries of the Devonshire Scholarships will join the school from September 2011.

Through Trent’s whole school ethos of providing students with a Total Curriculum, pupils are equipped to embrace the academic and non-academic challenges of school, university and life beyond with a bold outlook, spirit and creativity.

Gill Dixon, Head of Trent College, said: “It is with great excitement that we embark on this next venture in Trent College’s history. Broadening access to the fantastic opportunities offered by Trent College is in the spirit of the school’s founding vision. This is our way of keeping faithful to the Founders’ ideals, and creating stronger links between Trent College and the wider community.”

The Devonshire Scholarships will build on the work started by Trent College’s original patrons, which included William Cavendish, the Seventh Duke of Devonshire. He did much to improve UK education and as well as being a founding patron of Trent he was also the Chancellor of the University Cambridge and London. The Duke also made a major contribution to the founding of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge that has an extraordinary history of discovery and innovation in Physics.
