On Tuesday 12th March, Trent students Poppy Barnes and Savannah Parker travelled to Sheffield to interview Trent Collegemembers of the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team.

Their interview was conducted as part of the school’s involvement in the BBC News School Report, in which year 9 then spent a morning as roving reporters.

GB and Sheffield Steelers Captain Jonathon Phillips and his teammates Mark Thomas, Jason Hewitt and Ashley Tait gave these budding journalists an insight to the world of competitive sport, the pressures of playing for GB and their advice to the sports stars of the future.

Phillips advised students to “Enjoy it. It’s a great experience to go out to other countries to meet people.” Tait added, “It helps to start young and it’s all about practice. Everything you do, like work in the gym and practice sessions help. Work as hard as you can”.

Savannah and Poppy both liked the opportunity immensely and liked editing their final article for the News Day on Thursday 21st March. We hope this is the start of some budding journalists for the future!
