Wednesday 16th March saw the Mount St Mary’s First XV Team take to Twickenham and win the U18 Vase Cup, in a final match against Sutton Valance.

They are the first Mount team to reach this stage since 1994, with that team also winning their match against Newcastle, and some of those players attended Twickenham again yesterday to cheer on the boys.

Five coaches full of students, staff and parents also travelled to the grounds and back yesterday to cheer the boys on. With voices carrying across the entire stadium, a single word was chanted at the players: “Mount”.

During 70 gruelling minutes of rain, mud, and battling for every inch of ground, Andrew Charlish produced a stunning drop kick in the second half, to produce the final 3-0 score.

The wait was tense for both Coaches and Spectators, with both team’s defences giving their absolute all to protect their lines. As the final whistle blew, the stadium erupted. The trophy was coming home with our boys.

Upon the Team’s arrival back at school last night, Head Coach, Dylan Campbell handed the Vase Cup over to Headmaster Dan Wright, and said, “I promised you a trophy.” It is being proudly displayed ahead of a formal presentation to the team and Mr. Campbell later this week.

The 2022 Mount First XV Team now join a legacy, and will go down in Mountaineer history. What a day, what a game, what a team.
