OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWellington Junior School explored new lands for World Book Day last week, as Year 5 children enjoyed a sizzling series of Caribbean stories, dances and songs. Dressed in a riot of different colours and styles, the children were given a true flavour of the Caribbean, and Jamaica in particular. They danced and sang to reggae songs, made up their own sound effects to a traditional Anansi story and listened to stories read in patois, one of the languages of Jamaica – this also reinforced their geography work. After that, the whole school enjoyed a truly spectacular Caribbean-themed lunch of spicy chicken and prawn dishes, tropical fruit smoothies and ice cream. There was even a burst of sunshine and blue skies to help give a warm, Caribbean glow!

To finish off World Book Day with style, over 100 parents, grandparents and children piled into the Junior School hall for an evening of storytelling. Wearing pyjamas, onesies and clutching teddies, everyone sat by candlelight with lashings of cocoa and homemade biscuits to enjoy the traditional joys of sharing a story.!
