Charlie Pemberton - Cambridge Choral ScholarOne of our five Oxbridge candidates has also been offered a Choral scholarship at a prestigious Cambridge College.

Charlie Pemberton, who has been offered a place to read Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, also auditioned for a choral scholarship at Selwyn College

Selwyn’s newest CD regularly features on Classic FM and the director of music is Sarah Macdonald – the first ever woman to hold such a post at Oxbridge.

“This will definitely be a new challenge, “commented Charlie. “I will have Evensong three nights a week and international tours each summer.  It will be an amazing opportunity for me to perform the music that I adore. Newnham College is across the road from Selwyn College but is non-denominational so doesn’t have a chapel, so I will have the best of both worlds”.

Charlie has an auspicious choral history, having won the inaugural Taunton Young Singer of the Year competition last year. She also beat hundreds of hopefuls to gain a place in the prestigious Rodophus Choir, so spent the summer at St John’s College Cambridge at one of the celebrated Eton Choral Courses – known to be an essential for any able young singers considering applying for choral scholarships at university.

Charlie has also made a great impression upon the homeless charity Shelter, and was their “face” last year. Charlie sang Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria at the charity’s Carol Service at St Martin in the Fields in London, then made an emotional and impassioned speech about the plight of homeless across the country.

Charlie is one of five Wellington School pupils to be offered places at Oxbridge in September.
