Wellington_School_Maths_OlympiadPupils from Wellington School have achieved spectacular success in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. In February, Wellington School students joined over 200,000 young mathematicians from across the country. The school was very successful and 15 students secured top marks achieving gold certificates.

In March, 500 of the highest scorers in the country were invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad, a two hour written paper where candidates attempt six challenging problems.

Lydia Buckingham and Linda Zhong, both in year 11 at Wellington School, achieved the highest award; they both obtained distinctions, a gold medal and a book prize. Their results place them in the highest scoring fifty students in the country.

For Lydia, this is the latest accolade in a series of impressive results in National Mathematics competitions. She has now achieved Olympiad distinctions in each of the last four years and has compiled a collection of medals and prizes. Last summer, her consistently high scores earned her a place at the National Mathematics Summer School together with forty of the most talented young mathematicians from across the country.

“What a wonderful achievement,” commented Peter Buckingham, Head of Maths at Wellington School. “Both girls demonstrate a real interest in Mathematics and enjoy tackling problems which are well beyond usual classroom mathematics. The school is very proud to have two students in the top fifty of this prestigious event.”
