Rudi Oppenheimer Holocaust survivor with studentsWellington School welcomed visitors from the Holocaust Education Trust to work with students in Years 9-13. During the morning session, Holocaust Educator Alex Fender discussed the history of the Holocaust, and challenged Year 9 students to think about the moral and ethical implications of such a horrific event.

In the afternoon, Holocaust survivor Rudi Oppenheimer gave a talk to an audience of students from Years 9-13. Rudi told his story of life in Westerbork Transit Camp in Holland, as well as his experiences in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where he was incarcerated with the rest of his family. Many students in the audience posed well thought-out questions, which Rudi answered succinctly and in many cases with humour.

Head of History at Wellington Scholl commented, “a number of students stayed behind after the talk to chat to Rudi, and were in awe of Rudi’s openness and equanimity when discussing such a traumatic part of his life. We are immensely grateful to him for coming to share his experiences with us,” concluded Mr Caulfield.
