Wellington_School_pink_socks_rugbyWellington School’s burly Under 14 rugby team raised £585 for the charity Cancer Research UK by turning out in bright pink socks for their last game of the season.

Dawn Harrison, the charity’s local fundraising manager came along to the school to be presented with the cheque by Joel Gibson (Year 9) – the pupil who thought up the scheme.

“We are delighted that these boys have recognised the need and acted positively to make a difference” said Dawn.  “I understand that many of the squad have been touched by cancer this year, with grandparents and some parents facing the disease.  The charity is making huge strides in research and every penny raised brings us closer to finding a cure.”

The boys were sponsored to wear the socks and also received a commemorative photograph and programme.

“Cancer destroys lives, rugby brighten lives” concluded Joel.  “We want to use one against the other”.
