Wellington School Spectacular “Come & Sing” Event Attracts Hundreds of Local Children

A spectacular performance took place at Wellington School last night.

Over 300 children from 16 schools across Somerset and Devon turned out to take part in the 13th “Come and Sing” spectacular! They arrived for an afternoon of workshops and rehearsals, before performing a dazzling array of classic “Songs from the Movies” to a thrilled audience of over 1000!

Pupils came for rehearsals and a sing-off to find our star soloists for the performance. In the evening, hundreds of parents, grandparent, friends and relatives poured into the packed Sports Hall to hear the most phenomenal concert, complete with a professional band!

“All the pupils had learned the songs in their schools with the help of their music teachers, and we ran workshops earlier in the term.  When they finally came together, the sound was electrifiying – such an exciting moment,” commented Tara Copus, from Wellington School, who masterminded the whole event. The excitement mounted as the huge audience bustled in and the children performed an exhilarating song medley. The sound was phenomenal with some tricky harmonies and timings and the live band lifted the whole event to a totally different level. Songs included Sthe Bare Necessities, Under The Sea, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I’m a Believer and after a standing ovation, an encore of Happy!  Tara was dressed as Dorothy from her favourite musical The Wizard of Oz, whilst Musical Director Gareth Dayus-Jones was a very splendid scarecrow!.

“Each school had auditioned a boy and girl for the solos so there was a tense and nail-biting, blind “The Voice” style sing-off for each role.  The winners performed the roles in the concert that evening. We were delighted to welcome Katie from North Newton Primary School, and Ruaridh from Bolham Primary School to sing solos to a packed audience – seriously brave! The runners up all performed a fabulous rap to “Everything is Awesome” from the Logo Movie.”

“It was tremendously exciting to have such an array of fantastic singers from so many schools coming along – there is some serious talent around and we feel privileged to have been able to showcase some of it last week.  My thanks must go to all the primary music teachers who have worked so hard with their children to make this happen” concluded Tara Copus.

The schools taking part were; Bishops Nympton Primary School, Bolham Primary School, Burlescombe Primary School, Cotford St Luke Primary School, Curry Mallet CofE Primary School, Kentisbeare CofE Primary School, North Newton Primary School, North Petherton Community Primary School, Plymtree CofE Primary School, Rockwell Green CofE Primary School, Stockland Primary School, Tipton St John Primary School, Webbers Primary School, Upottery Primary School, West Buckland Primary School, Wellington Prep School and West Monkton CofE School.
