West Buckland School has set a goal to plant over 600 trees on their campus.

In a proactive response to climate change and a commitment to enhancing our local environment, our school has launched a substantial tree-planting initiative this autumn. Our aim is to mitigate carbon emissions, boost biodiversity, and manage surface water runoff more effectively. We’re excited to share the successful planting of over 600 trees on our campus, generously provided by the Woodland Trust.

This significant project has been spearheaded by Mr. Shawcross, alongside our enthusiastic students. Active participants include the prep school’s conservation group, the Year 10 students who are part of the WEBS conservation ‘Mad Monday’ programme, and the Year 7 outdoor learning group, who are engaging in this project as a component of their John Muir Award. Complementing our tree-planting efforts, we have also recently installed new solar panels, reinforcing our pledge to foster environmental sustainability.

In line with the planning conditions for our solar panels, we are also establishing a new copse. This consists of:

420 trees from the Woodland Trust, including a diverse Wild Harvest Pack with species like hazel, blackthorn, crab apple, elder, dog rose, and rowan. These trees are specially chosen to offer a rich variety of fruits and nuts to local wildlife.

An additional 200 trees to fulfill solar panel planning requirements, including 50 Alder, 50 Silver Birch, 25 Hawthorn, 50 Sessile Oak, and 25 Willow trees. These trees are integral to our Conservation Monday initiative.

We would like to thank Mr. Shawcross for his leadership and dedication to inspiring our students toward a sustainable and greener future.
