West Buckland Netball Academy Selection

Five West Buckland girls have been selected to join the U14 North Devon Netball Satellite Academy. Year 8 pupils Jess Thompson, Molly Down and Eluned Davies along with Year 7 pupils Tiger-Lily Redmore and Grace Wilton will take part in 15 academy training sessions commencing from September.

The Satellite Academy is the first step on England Netball’s Player Performance Pathway, a process for developing athletes with the attributes to attain excellence. The Satellite Academy provides talented young athletes access to quality coaching, a structured technical training programme and an introduction to a basic fitness schedule.

The West Buckland pupils were selected after attending trials with other promising young netball players from across North Devon earlier in June.

On Friday 23rd June, the Prep School cricket team travelled to North Devon Cricket Club’s beautiful ground at Instow to play in the Graham Harris Cup Final against Bideford. They put in a fantastic display against a tough opposition fielding some quick bowlers.

Bideford batted first and, after their 20 overs, scored a good total of 103-5. The pick of the West Buckland bowlers were Edward Butler (4-0-12-2), Cameron Ford (4-0-11-1) and Reuben Windley (4-0-19-2).

In response the West Buckland batsmen started well; Cameron Ford being able to see off the opening bowlers before being run out on 12 runs. Jack Prickett and Edward Butler contributed well but in the end the boys could not score fast enough, finishing on 73-6 after their 20 overs.

The young West Buckland team put in a special performance that was all the more remarkable as the team comprised of mainly Year 5 and Year 4 pupils whilst the opposition were mainly two to three years older. The future of sport at West Buckland is certainly very bright!
