Westbourne House School pupils have recently taken part in Outdoor Classroom Day.

The global campaign, led by Learning through Landscapes, aims to get children outside and learning.

Year 2 pupils took part in canoeing sessions on the school’s lake, which involved observing its wildlife and working as a team to navigate the setting.

The school’s Year 8 pupils have been learning about shapes and how to use Euler’s formula, exploring the relationship between the number of faces, edges and vertices by making small models out of straws. This led to them venturing outside to make giant tetrahedron, octahedron and icosahedron to hang as art works in the trees around the school grounds.

Science students have been exploring the woods and searching for creatures, with maths pupils measuring rectangles found in the architecture of the school. The school has always believed that play is a great way to develop life skills as well as simply ensuring children enjoy their childhood.

Martin Barker, headmaster, said: “Our children benefit from being active, getting fresh air and learning from their environment.”
