On Saturday 22nd June, two Year 8 pupils, Josh Greenhalgh and Chad Trainor, set out to complete a mini-triathlon as Wycliffe Collegepart of the Wycliffe Prep School’s ‘Kirby Challenge’ and also to raise money for the School’s chosen charity, War Child.

The boys set off from Nailsworth for the first stage, with a 5-mile cycle to Wycliffe Senior School; this was followed by a two-mile run to Stratford Park Leisure Centre and then the killer – a mile swim in the outdoor pool!

Under normal summer conditions, the outdoor-swim would have been achievable.

However, due to the unseasonably chilly weather the pool had only reached 12 degrees and they struggled with cramp and cold as well as experiencing breathing difficulties.

It was decided to switch to the indoor-pool so they could complete the swim in less harsh conditions.

Liam Gillespie, who is a gap student at the Prep School and Chad’s cousin, joined the boys in their challenge. Liam’s support was invaluable and helped the boys achieve their goal despite the wind and cold.

Although they experienced some difficulties along the way, the level of support they received from family and friends boosted them. This enabled them to raise £457.00 of their £500 target.

Josh and Chad are confident they will reach their fund raising goal and are looking forward to their next challenge.
