The Queen’s College Year 5 Science Team has recently qualified for the prestigious national finals of the National Queens CollegeInter-School Science Championships which will be held at the end of the Summer term.

The team of Oliver Haste, Caitlin Bartlett, Andrew Smith and Oscar Hinds has competed exceedingly well in the local area heats and semi finals to reach this stage of the challenging Science quiz, especially considering that over 20,000 children from more than 800 schools took part in the qualifier quizzes.

The top 12 teams will battle it out in the national final, hosted by the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire. On the day, the budding young scientists will receive personal tours of this cutting edge facility by the resident scientists.

The Science Championships aim to engage, motivate and inspire Year 5 children, firing their interest in Science, and the championships test them on a wide range of topic areas from the solar system to the smallest creatures on earth, from an understanding of how our bodies work to the great scientific advances throughout history, from inventions that changed our world to science in our everyday lives.

Said Queen’s College Headmistress Tracey Khodabandehloo: “I am absolutely thrilled that the children have done so well in Science.

Here at Queen’s we have specialist Science teaching from a young age and a purpose-built Junior Science laboratory to really engage the children and fire their interest. This, combined with our small class sizes, excellent teaching and pastoral care, really is making the difference in how our pupils achieve and feel valued.”
