School Information

Why Badminton?
Badminton is a thriving day and boarding school which has remained at the
forefront of girls’ education in the UK for well over 160 years. Whilst the
School retains a nationally outstanding academic record, its focus continues
to be on nurturing the girls’ natural curiosity and fuelling their passion for
learning. Therefore, we select girls on their personal strengths and all-round
ability, as well as their academic potential. It is a characteristic of Badminton
girls that they are thoughtful individuals, able to evaluate information and
decide for themselves. This approach extends beyond their studies and
into the day-to-day life of the School, where girls are given a wide range of
opportunities to grow, develop and express themselves in an enormous range
of activities. The Badminton community gives girls a chance to develop an
understanding of the viewpoints of others and to think about contributing
to the world around them. Girls leave Badminton ready to face the changing
and challenging wider world and, when they do, they take with them a strong
network of lifelong friends developed through a wealth of shared experiences.
Why Badminton? You’ll be able to answer that for yourself when you visit us,
meet our pupils and experience our vibrant School.

Inside the Classroom
At Badminton, we believe in really getting ‘under the skin’ of whatever we
do, not just skating over the top. To phrase this eloquently, you could say it’s
our holistic approach to education! The girls get really stuck into the subject
they are learning, always complementing their studies and enriching their
theoretical knowledge with practical co-curricular activities ranging from
engineering workshops at Clifton’s Suspension Bridge, to trips to analyse
primate behaviour at the Gerald Durrell Wildlife Centre in Jersey. Above all,
learning at Badminton is FUN as we encourage the girls to actively apply
their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom in real world examples
as much as (or even more than!) within it. A result of this approach is
our consistently impressive academic results, which enable the girls to
access a wealth of world-class universities, music conservatoires and art
colleges. The curriculum and timetable are constructed to achieve a balance
between academic achievement, personal development, life skills and other
enterprising activity and our small classes ensure that all the girls receive
individual help and attention from their teachers.

Our outstanding facilities
All of our first-class facilities are situated on site. There is an outstanding
creative arts centre and a fully equipped science centre and music school with
Badminton
its own recording studio. Badminton School also has a range of opportunities
for Junior and Senior girls in our new multi-million pound sports centre and
with our sports partnerships. Its opening in the spring of 2018, complete with
fencing piste, cricket nets and climbing wall shows our continued recognition
of the importance that sport plays in lives of our pupils. Our sports facilities
also include an indoor swimming pool, international size AstroTurf pitch, seven
tennis and netball courts, a gymnasium and fitness suite. The self-contained
Sixth Form centre has university style study-bedrooms for boarders and shared
study areas for all day girls, together with seminar rooms, computer facilities
and large recreation areas. There is a state-of-the-art, modern boarding house
designed for 13-16-year-olds with excellent study and ocial facilities, and a
homely Junior Boarding House for 9-12-year-olds.

Badminton in Bristol
Badminton is set on the leafy outskirts of the University City of Bristol and
provides all the amenities and opportunities of a diverse city, mixed with
the green open space of the surrounding areas. The School itself has an
enviable sense of community which is felt the moment you step through
the gates into the private, secure campus where our girls have the space and
time to grow, develop and discover who they are and who they want to be,
at their own pace. The mixture of old and new buildings gives the School a
strong sense of its history whilst remaining modern and functional. Only 1½
hours from Heathrow, the School is easily accessible from London and is 30
minutes from Bristol International Airport. We escort the girls to and from
the airport at the beginning and end of terms to ensure their safe arrival and
departure to and from the School.

Student Profile

Badminton School for Girls, pupilName: Sophie Age: 18 Nationality: British School: Badminton School Course: A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths How long have you been boarding? My younger sister and I first started boarding when I was in Year 5. We were full boarders until Year 7, when our family moved closer to Bristol – we have both been weekly boarders ever since. Why did you choose Badminton? My dad’s in the Royal Engineers and is out of the country a lot. My parents thought that school could be a stable place for us. We had close family friends, also in the Army, who already had two children at Badminton and recommended it. Of course, my parents probably looked more at the calibre of the School and what it could do for us, than the fact that it had the most amazing ‘rough patch’ adventure play area! What was it like as a new girl? My first memory of the School is walking up the Junior School steps and the housemistress coming up and giving me a great big hug, and saying ‘Welcome to Badminton, Sophie!’ When my sister and I came for visits and ‘taster’ stays, we thought it was very Harry Potter-ish and boarding felt like one big sleepover. But after about a week it becomes very normal. Badminton parents and girls are very proactive; you really do not feel the ‘new girl’ for long. I made really good friends quickly and, nine years on, the same girls are still some of my closest friends. What do you like about boarding? People tend to respect other people’s space, but you always have someone there if you need help. A lot of the time we just go to the common room to sit with our mags and books, watch telly or chat with our huge mugs of tea – we’re all tea addicts! How do you cope with being at school and then going home? My own room in the Sixth Form Centre feels just as much ‘home’ as my family home does. When I go home I am so used to being organised, and doing mundane things such as laundry, that I feel incredibly guilty when I let my mum do any of it! What’s it like being a boarder from a Forces family? When you board you are already away from home, so the only difference is that your home moves around! I have friends at school who also have parents in the Forces, so there is always someone to talk to. My teachers knew when my dad was in Afghanistan, and I got the impression that they were keeping an eye on me. If I wanted to discuss anything I also had friends who had been in the same situation and understood. How do you feel about leaving Badminton? I am in limbo between being ready to go and not wanting to leave Badminton. In a way it’s like leaving home, but we’re better prepared for the next step. I’m leaving a place where I have truly enjoyed myself – I can’t imagine being anywhere else!
