School Information
History
Founded in 1541 Berkhamsted celebrated its 475th year anniversary in
2016 with a visit from The Queen. There are around 2,000 students at
Berkhamsted School with approximately 400 students in the Sixth Form
studying at A-level. There are approximately 2,000 students from the
age of 3 to the age of 16 when they take GCSE exams.
Academic
90.4% of all students were awarded an A* – B at A Level and 75% achieved
Grades 7 to 9 at GCSE in 2022. Around 5 students enter Oxford and Cambridge
each year, and the majority of students receiving their first choice of university.
Location
The school is situated within the idyllic Chiltern Hills market town of
Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire with a thriving local community; yet it is only
30 minutes direct from London Euston and under 40 minutes by car from
both Heathrow and Luton airports.
Boarding
As a boarder at Berkhamsted, you will experience life at a traditional English
independent school as a member of a small, diverse boarding community of
around 85 or so students.
Our boarding community is a mixture of full boarders (termly), weekly
boarders from Year 9 (Sunday – Thursday nights) and local pupils who flexiboard from Year 7, on one or two nights a week due to school commitments
(subject to availability). A total of 63 of our boarders are international. Current
countries include: China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine.
Boarding accommodation
Boarding accommodation is in two large houses, one for boys and one for
girls. These have been completely refurbished and offer an excellent standard
of accommodation. They offer students the opportunity to study in a small
rural town and enjoy both local amenities and access to London.
Social mix
International students have a great opportunity to create lasting friendships
and connections with English children while they are studying together. This
offers a unique opportunity for international students in a traditional British
environment. Ratio of UK students to International in our Senior Schools is
85: 1061 which represents 8%.
EAL
The school provides English language courses for non-UK boarders who are
identified as needing IELTS tuition and English language support at no extra
cost to the student. These lessons are timetabled three times a week and will
focus on providing students with the academic skills and language needed to
be successful in their A Levels and IELTS exam.
Entry
Selective based on tests and interviews.
Fees
2023 – 24 fees for full boarding are £41,210 per year. There is a deposit
required of one term’s fees. There are no leave weekends and one week’s half
term each term.
