Charterhouse Boarding SchoolCharterhouse, with four centuries of history behind it, is one of the leading independent schools in the world and is committed to being at the forefront of educational progress in the twenty-first century.

Set in a magnificent 250 acre site, Charterhouse offers an outstanding education to boys aged 13 to 18 and girls from 16 to 18. The School has around 800 pupils, all of whom, except for about 30 day boarders, are boarders.

The highly qualified teaching staff combines academic excellence with sympathetic and imaginative teaching to foster a love of knowledge and study. The emphasis is on developing independent thinking and enquiring minds, not simply on fulfilling the requirements of public examinations.

The curriculum follows the normal path to (I)GCSEs in Year 11, followed by a choice of Cambridge Pre-U courses or the IB Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. We aim to stretch and challenge all our pupils, in many cases well beyond the demands of the syllabus. Academic results are excellent, and the university destinations of our leavers reflect both their abilities and the quality of the education we provide.

Extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities have a high profile, and pupils are encouraged to develop a variety of interests. Music, art, technology and drama are popular and successful, with work of the highest quality from the most talented, and wide participation from others of all abilities. A remarkable variety of games are played, with school teams at all levels, and a large number of house matches for those who wish to participate. The Queen’s Sports Centre, three AstroTurf pitches and tennis courts complement many acres of playing fields.

The boarding houses provide comfortable, modern accommodation. All have been recently refurbished and most pupils have single study-bedrooms. Pastoral care is a very high priority; housemasters and matrons reside in the houses and are assisted by teams of tutors.

Entry requirements
Most boys enter at 13 from prep schools, after success in the Foundation Scholarship or Common Entrance exams, but applications are welcomed from boys at other schools and overseas, who take tests set by the School. There are many scholarships and awards (academic, music, art, all-rounder and sport), and a number of bursaries for pupils whose parents are unable to afford the fees.

About 35 boys and 70 girls enter the sixth form each year after testing at Charterhouse in November.

“The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent. The quality of the pupils’ personal development is excellent.” [ISI Educational Quality Inspection Report 2017]
