Edge Grove is a successful and vibrant day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3-13 years. Located in Aldenham Village in 28 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, it is only 15 miles from central London and very close to the M1 and M25 motorways. Our impressive setting and facilities ensure pupils are exposed to a wide range of experiences and develop confidence in a challenging, fun and inspirational environment. Flexi and weekly boarding is offered from Year 3 (age 7).

The extensive facilities include a new purpose-built building for Pre-School (Nursery for ages 3-4 years) with two floors and vast outdoor space: an outdoor learning hub with a gazebo and stage; two Forest School sites for the Forest School curriculum which is taught in the Pre Prep and Lower School; an adventure playground; a language classroom with a dedicated ‘virtual language lab’; iPads throughout the school and 1:1 from Year 5; iMacs for music technology; a fully-equipped textiles room and two science laboratories; and purpose-built and state of the art facilities for Home Economics.

Our impressive sports facilities include a 20-meter heated swimming pool; vast playing fields with ten junior football fields; a 3-court badminton Sports Hall; an Astro-turf hockey pitch; two tennis/netball courts and six outdoor/four indoor cricket nets.

The environment in boarding at Edge Grove is friendly, fun and nurturing. The boarding facilities are housed in the original building of the school in contemporary, comfortable dormitories organised by age. The Headmaster and his family live in the main building as do the Housemaster, Housemistress and Gap students, all of whom work to maintain the smooth running of the boarding community.

Academic/pastoral care

The overwhelming majority of our pupils gain a place at their first choice of senior school – including leading independent schools nationally – with many achieving scholarships and awards to schools such as Harrow, Eton, Merchant Taylors’, Mill Hill, Habs Girls, Habs Boys and North London Collegiate. Many pupils move on to many reputable UK boarding schools, such as Winchester, Rugby, Oundle, Haileybury, Uppingham, Stowe and King’s Canterbury.

Small class sizes and specialist subject teaching enable pupils to achieve highly. Pupils are encouraged to discover, apply and communicate their learning and understanding, to become independent thinkers, to grow in confidence whilst enjoying inspirational and creative teaching.

Ben Evans, Headmaster, explains: ‘As a school we must preserve tradition but also be forward-thinking and embrace the new – new teaching methods, new technologies and new habits. But without forgetting our values and the most basic and common-sense approach to education – happy children and inspirational teaching will ensure good progress by all.’

Extracurricular activities

The school runs a full and varied Activities Programme every day with many activities on offer such as specialist sports, photography, horse riding and a range of art, music and drama groups.

All major sports are played by boys and girls several times each week, with a deliberate balance between excellence and participation for all. The school hosts the IAPS national table-tennis competition every year.

Music and Drama

The majority of pupils play a musical instrument and there are numerous performance opportunities during the year for all musicians to participate in. Each year the school puts on a major musical production, involving pupils from Years 5–8, and every child from Pre-School to Year 5 performs in a year group play.
