School Information

Leading the way in girls’ education
Harrogate Ladies’ College is one of the UK’s leading independent schools
for girls aged 2-18. We have been educating inspirational women for more
than 125 years and we aim to inspire the next generation of women to be
brave, bold, challenge perceptions and to know that anything is possible
with hard work, determination and perseverance. The size of our family of
schools means that we know all of our pupils as individuals, the way their
parents know them. This enables us to work with them and challenge them
to achieve more both inside and outside of the classroom.

Academic excellence
Pupils achieve excellent exam results at both GCSE and A level and in 2022
78% of our Upper Sixth students secured their first or second choice of
university – a high percentage of which were Russell Group universities. There
are Oxbridge, Medicine and Veterinary Science preparation courses on offer,
as well as a specialist business school. All of our pupils receive individual
support and tutoring throughout the university application process.

Beyond the classroom
A dedicated weekend programme enables girls to try new things, visit new
places, develop new skills and build confidence. The choice of activities is
wide: from cultural trips to active experiences and social events – there’s
something for everyone!

Health and wellbeing
Wellness is at the heart of our school community and our wellness initiative is
designed to support pupils aged 2-18, staff and parents. Our Wellness Centre
is the hub for a wide range of activities to support and encourage all-round
physical, social and mental wellbeing including yoga and dance classes. In
addition, the £1/2 million re-developed swimming pool complex benefits
pupils of all ages and enhances the experience of participants and spectators.

A home away from home
Being a boarding pupil at Harrogate Ladies’ College is a unique life
experience. It is a warm, nurturing, family environment which enables girls
of all ages to build independence and lifelong friendships. Our boarders
come from all over the world and are fully integrated into our school
community. Each boarding house has a dedicated housemistress to care for
and support our girls. They also keep parents updated with what is going on
in school.

Location
Harrogate is a safe, cosmopolitan town with historic buildings and large
open spaces and parks. It has a vibrant café culture and exclusive shops and
boutiques. Our school is located in a quiet residential area just five minutes’
walk away from the centre meaning that girls can enjoy being part of
the local community. London is just over two hours by train, while Leeds
Bradford airport (20 minutes drive) offers shuttle flights to London
Heathrow (35 minutes). Manchester airport is 90 minutes drive.

“The quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent.” – Independent Schools Inspectorate

Student Profile

Harrogate Ladies College Ariadna Student ProfileAriadna, Russia, Year 13 "When I first arrived at HLC I was a bit nervous. Would I be able to make friends with English speakers? Now, two years on, I have some brilliant friends, including my best-friend-for-life, Vanessa. My advice would be: don’t be afraid to have foreigners as your friends. "I loved the Art, Textiles and Photography trip to Venice this year. In four amazing days we saw pretty much every gallery, museum and tourist attraction in the guidebook! I was really inspired by the architecture and atmosphere, and it helped me to focus on my goal of studying fashion at the Instituto Marongoni in London next year." Harrogate Ladies College Tilly Student ProfileTilly, UK, Year 11  "I was so excited about sport when I first started at HLC. I will never forget my first lacrosse match, which we won 21-1, or the day a ball went through the dining room window! "Earlier this year, I went to Malta on a netball tour. I was really worried about being homesick, but I wasn’t, and it was an amazing experience. We were undefeated in all our games, we had a great laugh and we made lots of new friends from different countries."
