School Information

Kingswood education ignites the potential in children, and transforms lives.
Since being founded by John Wesley in 1748 we have provided a happy,
caring and inspirational environment. The commitment to make a real
difference to every pupil sits at the very heart of the School’s ethos, while
individuality and innovation are valued and a sense of service is encouraged.
With excellent facilities for both boarders and day pupils from ages 11-18,
Kingswood is set within one of the most beautiful school sites in the South
West of England, having the luxury of over 120 acres of parkland but being
just ten minutes’ walk from the World Heritage City of Bath, and within easy
reach of major road, rail and air links.

A caring community
The wellbeing of all of our pupils is at the core of School life, with our
pastoral care awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating by the Independent Schools
Inspectorate in October 2022. The Kingswood for Life programme offers
age-appropriate support and information through house staff, tutors and
specialist staff. Our House system, with seven Houses run by experienced
House parents, is the foundation of the School. Each Senior School pupil
has a personal tutor who mentors them in academic work and personal
development, whilst keeping in close contact with parents or guardians.
These tutors are responsible for assisting each tutee with their personalised
independent learning plan, agreeing targets regularly and supporting their
aims. Pupils develop a strong attachment to their houses, participating in
a range of inter-house events, with a healthy attitude to the competition,
enhancing a true community feel.

Educating for life
Kingswood pupils develop lively, inquiring and well-informed minds, with
a lifelong love of learning. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, we
foster an individual’s educational development – spiritual, moral, social,
academic, cultural and physical.
At Kingswood, we pride ourselves on our strong examination performance
across the School, with 88% achieving A*-B grades at A Level in 2022, and
95% receiving an offer from their university of choice.
Outside the classroom, an extensive range of more than 100 cocurricular activities, clubs and societies are on offer to further enhance their educational experience. In addition, opportunities for service, to understand the world of work, guidance on higher education and inspirational guest speakers, trips and events round out the Kingswood experience.

Creative skills and individual talents
Our excellent facilities at Kingswood provide pupils with an opportunity to
exercise their creative skills and the School has long had a reputation for the
quality of its Art, Drama and Music. Kingswood students are regularly accepted
at the country’s top drama academies, or leave us to join a Conservatoire.
Although Sport is also taken very seriously, with successful teams across rugby,
hockey, netball, cricket and swimming, Kingswood embraces a ‘sport for all’
philosophy, offering pupils the chance to develop their skills whether in the
1st team or simply enjoying being active with friends. With national players
in Hockey, Judo, Fencing and Motor sport as well as a number of boys invited
to join the Bath Rugby Academy development pathway, top flight athletes
are supported to balance their sporting commitments with enjoying the full
breadth of a Kingswood education.

The Sixth Form – the perfect preparation for higher education
The Sixth Form years at Kingswood offer a rich and distinctive
educational experience. There are plenty of opportunities to develop
academic strengths, broaden personal interests and prepare for the
challenges and excitement of life beyond Kingswood. With a diverse
intake of new students joining those already at Kingswood, the Sixth
Form has a very special atmosphere and, in its positive ethos and encouragement to be involved, sets the tone for the whole School. The Dixon Sixth Form Centre, with dedicated studies for each student and
a Sixth Form Café, is a central focus for Sixth Form life. Small group
teaching, personalised careers advice, support, and opportunities to
take on leadership roles are all strong features of Sixth Form life at
Kingswood. The quality of relationships with their peers and staff is
often quoted as one of the Sixth Form’s most significant strengths. For
all the breadth of experience the Sixth Form provides, the outstanding
academic results and the superb record of entrance to top universities,
it is the quality of the Sixth Formers themselves that makes Kingswood
so distinctive. We encourage our students to involve themselves in
all aspects of School life and to develop the qualities of leadership,
independence, self-reliance and respect for others, all of which will
enable them to flourish in their lives after Kingswood.

Scholarships
Academic and special talent scholarships (music, drama, design technology,
art and sport) are available for entry to Year 7, Year 9 and the Sixth Form.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships A wide range of scholarships are available each year for entry to Years 7, 9, and 12. The awards are made in recognition of excellence in Academic ability, Art, Drama, Design & Technology, Music, and Sport; a John Wesley Scholarship to recognise an all-round contribution to school life is also available for boarding students. (Please refer to the booklet which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page for further information.)

Bursaries

In keeping with the Christian ethos and traditions of the School, the Headmaster and Governors seek to provide financial assistance to families where it is felt that a particular child would benefit from the type of education Kingswood provides and where there is a proven genuine need. All bursary applications are means-tested for eligibility and assessed by the Bursar and Headmaster. Bursaries are not available for children attending the Kingswood Preparatory School unless there are very exceptional circumstances. Parents who wish to be considered for bursarial support should complete the Financial Statement Form which can be requested through the Registrar. The completed form should be submitted in confidence, together with any relevant supporting information, for assessment by the Bursar.  As no awards can be made after an offer is made, we encourage families who feel they may be eligible for bursarial support to discuss the matter with the Registrar and/or the Bursar, well in advance of making a formal application for entry, and before any assessment papers are taken.
