Founded in 1495, Loughborough Grammar School is one of the oldest and most academically successful schools in the UK. The Grammar School educates over 1,000 boys, including 70 boarders, from the age of 10 to 18, and prides itself on providing a stimulating environment, a wide range of activities and a family atmosphere. The two boarding houses, run by a housemaster and his wife plus assistants who live on the site, are an integral part of the School, and cater for weekly and termly boarders.
The School is situated on a delightful, open campus and is ideally located in the heart of England, being very accessible by both road and rail, and within easy reach of Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands Airports.
We offer a very wide and flexible curriculum in Years 6–11, combining the more traditional with the latest in technological disciplines; boys study at least nine subjects at GCSE. In 2014, there was an overall GCSE pass rate of 95%, with almost 30% of all grades awarded at A*. At A-level 27% of grades awarded were at A* and 57% at A* or A.
Thirteen boys gained places at Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard in 2014. Over 95% of all boys leave to follow degree courses at the most prestigious universities in the UK.
We place considerable emphasis on maximising all boys’ potential, whatever their strengths, and a wide range of music, drama and sporting activities is available. There is a vast selection of sports available to all, and boys from Loughborough are regularly selected for county, regional and national teams. We run about 50 clubs and societies for all ages and tastes, from bridge to karting and ceramics to ‘bugs’.
All boys sit the School’s entrance examination at 10+ and 11+. At 13+, entrance is either by the School’s examination or by Common Entrance (CEE). Sixth-form places are offered on the basis of a report from the candidate’s school as well as GCSE (or equivalent) predictions, or based on their performance in the School’s own tests. All overseas students joining the sixth form will be required to undertake a cultural enhancement programme for which there will be an additional charge.
A number of scholarships are offered each year at 10+, 11+, 13+/CEE and at the sixth form. The School also offers a 25% boarding fee remission to pupils from HM Forces and sons of the clergy.
‘Our aim is to send out young men who are caring and confident; who have achieved to their potential and have a determination to make a positive contribution with their lives.’
