School Information

Preparing young hearts and minds to “go forth and set
the world on fire”.
Mount St Mary’s College is an inclusive co-educational school and
families of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome here. Through the
pursuit of excellence in all we do at ‘the Mount’ and Barlborough Hall
School and by caring for the whole person, we produce grateful and
generous, learned and wise young men and women of conscience,
compassion and competence.

We are a Jesuit school, founded in 1842 for “improvement in living
and learning for the greater glory of God and the common good”.
The Mount is an idyllic place for children to grow into the fullness of
our Jesuit vision, becoming good ‘Men and Women for Others’ from the
moment they join us, through to the end of Sixth Form aged 18.

Beautiful Grounds, easily accessible
Our school is a mere 5 minutes’ drive from the M1 motorway, which
means you can easily get to and from many major airports and railway
stations. Not that you would notice from our blissfully rural locations.
The Mount is set in 250 acres of stunning Countryside, which provides
the backdrop for our Olympic-sized athletics track, rugby and football
pitches, cricket wickets, and cross country routes.
Our boarding houses are at the heart of our expansive campus, and our
boarding students experience the very best of college life whilst living at
the Mount.

More than a classroom
Our academic performance always exceeds that of the national average.
We have deliberately small class sizes, enabling our teachers to work
closely with your child so they receive the very best from their education
at the Mount. However, our specialities extend beyond the classroom.
We have specialist tutors for sports, music and theatre, as well a
nationally-renowned CCF programme. Our varied sporting teams
regularly win their fixtures and place high in tournaments. We are also
now a PSG Training Academy for all young budding footballers.
We stage musical and theatrical shows at least annually, and students
are always in attendance to support their peers, just as they would cheer
from the side-lines of a sports pitch.

Weekends are never dull either, with regular trips to Country Parks,
Cinemas and Sporting Pitches organised every week. Our boarding staff
are always on hand, providing excellent care and support, and creating a
warm, positive atmosphere, and memories that your child will remember
long after they move on from the Mount.

Student Profile

Name: Phil Age: 17 Nationality: German Achievements: School Captain; member of 1st XV rugby team; Debating Society; French and English as an Additional Language Subject Prizes After I decided to spend a year abroad, I had to find a suitable boarding school. I visited a number of schools before choosing Mount St Mary's College. I chose the College because of its nice location and its good teaching facilities. The College offers a broad range of subjects taught in small classes, and also an extensive extracurricular programme, including the Drama and the Debating Societies, clubs I personally enjoyed. I was warmly welcomed to the school community and I can certainly say that my friends at the College take the school ethos ('men and women for others') seriously. This means that the students learn to develop a supportive and caring manner. While at the College, I experienced many different things which definitely developed my character, be it playing rugby or working with disabled people at the Tuesday Club. I didn't just improve my English, I also made progress in all my other academic subjects, as well as getting used to life at a boarding school. Finally, I recommend Mount St Mary's to every student (boarders and day pupils) because it will prepare them for life after school, whilst also focusing on academic success. I am certainly going to miss the place next year.   Name: Emma Age:14 Nationality: British Achievements: U14 Hockey Captain; netball; rounders; athletics; tennis and cross-country; Grade 5 flute; Drama Society Emma has followed in the family tradition - her father attended the College and her brother is currently in the sixth form. She started at the school at the age of 11,and she is very popular and fully involved in boarding life. The good thing about the Mount is that you make friends with students across the year groups and from all over the world. The friends I have made here are certainly my friends for life. I really enjoy sport, music drama and art. I have represented the College in most sports and I have performed in numerous concerts, both playing and singing. The College is a very busy place and I have the opportunity to get involved in lots of activities. I enjoy the weekend activities programme, particularly the visits to York, Meadowhall, the cinema, bowling and Alton Towers. I keep in contact with home and friends via the telephone and e-mail. I am still in contact with friends from abroad who came to the College for a year to learn English. The Mount is a very friendly place and I am very happy here.
