School Information

Oakham School is a vibrant co-educational independent boarding and day
school for pupils aged between 10 and 18. Founded in 1584, its uniquely
structured population of 50:50 boarders and day pupils and 50:50 girls and
boys create a genuinely inclusive school community.
Set in the heart of rural England close to Rutland Water, Oakham offers full
boarding, weekly boarding and day options that fit around busy family life.
The School aims to provide an education for children that recognises that
these years are precious and should be joyful, memorable and transformative.

The Connected Curriculum
Oakham combines its exceptional pastoral care with academic excellence
and outstanding co-curricular opportunities, underpinned by its core values,
to enable its pupils to flourish at school and long into the future.
Not only is the School able to help its pupils to achieve outstanding
results in their examinations, but the Oakham difference is that its genuinely
holistic approach to education via its Connected Curriculum teaches pupils
how to take their studies further and rise to the intellectual challenges that
they will encounter in their later lives.

The Connected Curriculum means each individual pupil is given the
opportunity to excel in what they love the most and experience new things.
Unique and inclusive boarding and day structure
Pastoral care lies at the heart of Oakham School. All pupils – day and boarding –
belong to a House, where they are part of a larger community of pupils and staff.
Led by a Housemaster or Housemistress, and supported by a team of Tutors,
Prefects and a Matron, each House community is filled with people who care for all
aspects of its pupils’ wellbeing.
The unique Boarding House structure ensures that staff are expertly versed and
trained to the needs of their specific age group. Pupils will primarily go to their
Housemaster or Housemistress if there is a problem but there is a large wider
network of adults, who can offer support, for example the Chaplain, Medical
Centre staff, a counsellor, a mental health practitioner, and the catering team.
The Barraclough Dining Hall serves an extensive choice of nutritious and freshly
prepared food. The School’s state-of-the-art Medical and Pastoral Centre offers a
dedicated space to promote wellbeing, as well as offering medical support 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week.

Outstanding co-curriculum
Over many years, the School has received national recognition for its outstanding
achievements in sport, music, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.
Its rounded education means that students leave Oakham as intellectually
ambitious thinkers, who are effective and independent learners, well equipped with
the skills and habits of mind to thrive in tomorrow’s world.
There are five major drama productions every year and over 500 individual
music lessons are taught each week. Oakham also has a national reputation for
Sport, offering 30 different sports to students of all levels – from enthusiasts to
elite athletes.
Students can choose from over 130 activities to take part in every week to
discover and develop their interests and talents and provide service to others. In
addition to CCF, Duke of Edinburgh and Voluntary Action, options range from
dance to robotics, e-textiles to sailing – there really is something for everyone.
Above all, Oakham is a welcoming community that values learning and human
relationships, which are the bedrock of a successful and happy life.

“Founded in 1584, its uniquely structured population of 50:50 boarders and day pupils and 50:50 girls and boys creates a genuinely inclusive school community.”
