School Information

Established in 1901, Queen Margaret’s School for Girls (QM) is an independent
boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18. You will find us in glorious parkland
six miles south of York. But we are more than our surroundings, we are more
than a school: We’re a home from home, a family of learning and belonging in a
truly inspirational setting, with a riding school on site. We are somewhere every
girl can thrive, where they’ll be happy and healthy, grow their knowledge, skills
and confidence, and make friends for life. QM is somewhere that’s the bedrock
for success, it opens up opportunities and possibilities, inspires girls to forge their
own future, and gets them ready for life, whatever their calling. We nurture girls
to fulfil their ambitions, to realise their potential, to become the best women
they can be, and give them an amazing start in life.

Girls do so much better in single-sex education and we see our pupils
engaging enthusiastically in a range of activities – academic, sport, extracurricular
and social. No airs and graces, no frills or make-up, just girls getting stuck in,
Queen Margaret’s School for Girlsand having fun while they do it. They achieve academically (outstandingly so),
with the majority of Upper Sixth students gaining places at the country’s most
prestigious universities. Our girls come from a variety of backgrounds and,
with an increasing emphasis on the support available, we are proud that we are
making a QM education possible for an increasingly diverse range of students.
Each girl has a dedicated Personal Tutor to oversee her academic progress and
her general wellbeing. The health and happiness of students is central to life at
QM; the school has achieved the Gold Boarding School Mental Health Award.
Our girls have homes all over the UK and the rest of the world. Many board,
not because they have to, but because they want to. QM’s Bespoke Boarding is a
flexible boarding solution that’s tailored for each family. We can accommodate
the specific boarding needs of each girl; from one to seven nights a week, with a
set routine or something more flexible. We’ll create the best individual solution
for each student, so she can thrive.

The girls are the focus of life at QM and are at the heart of everything we do.
It’s this focus and an individualistic approach that allows our girls to carve their
own path, and flourish as formidable, independent women.

“QM is small but perfectly formed and has everything you could wish for, unless you crave
anonymity and getting lost in the crowd” – The Good Schools Guide

Scholarships and Bursaries

At QM we support girls in their individual gifts and talents. We endeavour to help each girl to discover her passion and unlock her potential. Our Scholarship programme is designed to identify strengths, nurture commitment and resilience, provide excitement, and to celebrate success. We offer Academic, Art, Choral, Dance, Drama, Music and Sport Scholarships. For more information about the benefits of being a scholar at QM and our expectations of scholars please contact our Admissions Team at admissions@queenmargarets.com / +44 (0) 1904 727630.

Student Profile

Queen Margaret's School Speech Day. 28.06.2014Name: Carolina Age: 15 Nationality: Spanish Course: Maths, Economics, Philosophy and Ethics, French How old were you when you started boarding? I started boarding when I was 13 years old. Are you a full or weekly boarder? I’m a full boarder at Queen Margaret’s School, York. Why did you want to go to boarding school? At first it was just a matter of convenience. I knew I wanted to study in the UK and, being Spanish, boarding was the only realistic choice for me. However, when my parents moved to England after I had been at QM for a year, I made the decision to remain a boarder due to all the academic and personal benefits I derived from it. I realised that being a boarder allowed me to make better use of my time during the week due to the characteristic QM busy atmosphere. I also wanted to carry on living with my friends who, by that time, had almost become family. Have other members of your family (or your friends) been to boarding school? No, I am the first. How did you find settling in at the school? I found it reasonably easy to settle in to boarding at QM. I must admit that the first month was quite difficult due to the language barrier. But even though communicating through gestures is usually not an ideal way of making new friends, everyone was so understanding and I quickly felt like a true Margaretian! The Guardian Angel system was very useful, as was the school’s international outlook. Any full boarder will tell you how special the friendships are that you form at Queen Margaret’s. Sharing so much with others has definitely changed the way I see the world. Even after only a few weeks at QM, I guarantee you’ll be surprised by how much you have in common with other girls here, both English and international. What is boarding life like? Boarding life at QM changes through the years as we are given more independence as we get older. When I first arrived in Year IV, I shared a room with four girls who I am still very close to now. It might seem daunting, but looking back, that term might have been one of the funniest periods of my life and even now we still refer to it often. In our last year of school we live in cottages, which we share with our closest friends. These are amazing and really do allow for more independence. We all have our own room and then we have a kitchen within each cottage where we often cook during the weekend. The food really is something to mention. It is delicious! The buffet allows for so many different options every day and they organise international cuisine days each term. What’s a typical day like? We start our day with morning registration where the boarding staff make sure we are all alive and well, followed by Chapel on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Fridays we have Assembly in which staff and students make announcements and reflect on the week’s highlights. It can be quite creative, surprising and every week we get something different; travel experiences, speakers, drama, music. We start lessons at 9:00 and the dining hall is open for lunch from 12:00 until 14:00. Many girls have sports or music lessons during this time. We then carry on with lessons until 17:30. What happens after school? And in the evenings? In the evening you may rehearse for the play or dance show or, even though I’m not one of them, many girls are very keen on sport and will play lacrosse, netball or rounders. On Fridays, we have house meetings. I should explain. We board in our year groups and then the whole school is divided into six houses, with girls from all years, which meet every Friday to socialise, play games or prepare for an upcoming event. Fun Song, Soft Song and the Christmas Charity Event are all competitions which are prepared in houses. Everyone gets very excited for these. Which lessons do you enjoy the most, and why? As an A Level student, I enjoy all my subjects and it is quite hard to pick only one. However, I would probably say Economics and French are the two which I have enjoyed the most. I already had a genuine interest in both subjects before studying them at QM but I think it has been the enthusiasm of my teachers which has made me look forward to these lessons. I find that, at QM, there’s a general emphasis on going beyond the textbook and relating learning to the real world. Moreover, I feel that my learning has been aided by being a boarder. French conversation lessons, literature club, French cinema club, economic news reels and, especially, frequent and diverse talks and lectures both in and out of school are just some activities I enjoy to complement my subjects. What do you do at the weekend? Weekends are packed with activities, especially for the younger years. I enjoy trips to the cinema and still enjoy the occasional trip to see a play, concert or an art exhibition. However as you get older, you get to choose what to do with your time and you can visit friends or go into York at weekends. We also have ‘Cellars’ which is open on Saturday nights, offering music and drinks for those over 18 with parental permission. Do you know which school/college/university you want to go to after finishing at your school? I have been offered a place at Durham University to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics. In what ways do you think you have developed since coming to boarding school? Boarding at QM has helped me develop in two main ways. First of all, I feel that being at an all girls’ boarding school has given me the confidence to have my own voice and to never play it dumb. Girls here are not ashamed of being competitive or aiming high whether it is in the classroom or on the playing field. If you are at all judged, it’s on how you treat people, not the way you look. I feel that my years here have allowed me to become who I really am, free from the constraints society imposes upon women. Secondly, Queen Margaret’s international nature has helped me develop cognitive skills such as the ability to question my own beliefs and values. There is no doubt that encountering people with sharply different backgrounds and ideas promotes intellectual growth. QM has been a perfect environment in which to develop my character at such a crucial age giving me the necessary strength to face future challenges.
