School Information

With shared values and educational expertise, the family at Queen’s ensures
pupil is nurtured to reach their full potential.

A safe place to learn
Queen’s works hard to ensure it provides a completely safe place to learn.
Queen’s offers a secure site with traditional buildings, impressive facilities,
lots of beautiful outdoor space and an on-site medical centre.

Examination success
A-level results are excellent – there is a consistent pass rate of 98% with
almost all students getting their first choice of university. In addition, Queen’s
also remains one of the top UK independent schools in terms of ‘value added’
thanks to excellent teaching, small class sizes and individual support.

Boarding
A vibrant and well organised boarding system means there is a real
sense of community. Pupils can board from age 7 to 18 years and an
experienced team of boarding house parents means pupils are well cared
for in comfortable, recently refurbished boarding accommodation. Parents
always have someone on hand to contact if there are ever any worries or
concerns. The school is well connected with major road and rail links to
Heathrow (2 hours) and Bristol and Exeter Airports (both 45 minutes).
The school also has a strong spiritual foundation and welcomes pupils
of all faiths with the chaplain available to any member of the Queen’s
community along with school counsellors and many staff trained in
mental health awareness.

Art, drama, music and sport
The school is renowned for outstanding results in the creative and performing
arts and has wonderful facilities for drama, music and dance including the
570 seat theatre on site. The purpose-built art department offers students
the opportunity to create outstanding pieces for exhibition and examination
purposes while sport is also strong with international and national success in
hockey, horse riding, athletics and swimming in recent years.

Co-curricular
Queen’s has become a centre of excellence for outdoor pursuits. The school
has one of the largest Duke of Edinburgh cohorts in the South West as
well as qualified instructors who lead competitive climbing. Other activities
include kayaking and a wide range of clubs and societies.

“A shining gem of a school offering an impressively rounded education. Queen’s achieves the perfect
balance of on- and off-curriculum opportunities, gentle and kind pastoral care and a grounded, closeknit community – all in a fabulous setting.” – Good Schools Guide 2022

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships and bursaries at Queen’s College have the linked roles of encouraging the most talented young people to choose this school and simultaneously helping to ensure that fees are not an overwhelming obstacle to taking up a place at Queen’s. Scholarships are awarded entirely on performance in the relevant discipline. The best scholars will be offered a discount on fees, irrespective of family means. Facts & figures The total number of scholarships and bursaries, plus the percentage discounts awarded, is at the Headmaster’s discretion. The exact numbers will vary from year to year in accordance with a range of factors. Scholarships may be applied for at three ages; 11+, 13+ and 16+. Dates for exams, tests and auditions will be published at the beginning of each academic year. Further details, including guidance on performance levels required to be eligible for a scholarship are available from the school office. Academic Scholarships These are awarded on the basis of performance in entrance tests set by the College, interviews and previous school reports. Scholarships will normally be held throughout the pupils’ school career but are subject to annual review against progress and effort. Many Queen’s scholars go on to gain places at the most prestigious universities in the UK and overseas. Art Scholarships Scholarships in art will be granted on the basis of the pupil’s portfolio of work and an interview with the Head of Art. Queen’s is a leading centre for the visual arts in Somerset and hosts the Quartz Festival exhibitions of paintings and sculpture every autumn. Many art scholars from the school have gone on to study at major art colleges and pursue careers in fine art or graphic design. Music Scholarships Queen’s music scholars contribute immeasurably to the life of the school via their leading roles in our orchestras, bands and choirs. Many also play in ensembles such as the National Youth Orchestra and the County Orchestra. All school groups make frequent visits to play and sing in Somerset and beyond. An organ scholarship is available, usually at Sixth Form level, but younger pupils may also apply. Performing Arts Scholarships Young people with a particular interest in drama, dance or the technical aspects of performance are invited to apply for performing arts scholarships. Queen’s has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its productions and scholars are generally at the heart of these shows. Most years see a student go on to study at a major school such as the Guildhall or Bristol Old Vic. Sports Scholarships Queen’s College sportsmen and women have many proud achievements ranging from Commonwealth gold medals to international and national honours. Young people with a particular talent and commitment to any of our major sports; rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, tennis, athletics and swimming are invited to attend trials for a scholarship at any one of the three age bands. All-rounders Pupils who demonstrate a high level ability in a wide range of academic and non-academic areas, yet fall short of a specific scholarship level, will be eligible for an all-rounder award. Like all scholarships it may be “topped-up” with a bursary. Sixth Form Scholarships Students entering the Sixth Form are eligible for a personal award of up to £500 based on their GCSE performance. The money may be spent on any project that would enhance a student’s CV. Previous students have chosen things ranging from driving lessons to foreign study trips. Expectations for Scholars Further details of the approximate level required to be eligible for an award in the various categories and the procedure for applying are available from the school office. Terms & Conditions All awards will be monitored for appropriate performance and effort. There will be a major review of the scholarship at the end of the GCSE year. Scholars would normally be expected to remain at Queen’s College for the Sixth Form. Scholarships and bursaries at Queen’s College have the linked roles of encouraging the most talented young people to choose this school and simultaneously helping to ensure that fees are not an overwhelming obstacle to taking up a place at Queen’s. Bursaries are means-tested against family resources and are intended to help families with financial difficulties meet the cost of school fees. They may be used to “top-up” a scholarship or be awarded on a stand-alone basis. Student Profile

student_queens_college_TauntonI was born in Nigeria and went to primary school there until I was eleven years old. After primary school I choose to go to Queens College, Taunton for many reasons, although the main reasons were that it has always had an outstanding academic reputation and also it seemed to have a very friendly atmosphere. When I finally arrived I found that settling into the school and into the boarding house was only hard at first because of the process of leaving home. Everyone was so inviting and easy to talk to, and all of the teachers supported me in the settling in process as well. In the boarding house there were several “getting to know everyone” activities which encouraged me to introduce myself and talk to everyone, so immediately I found friends. Although being a boarder one is prone to homesickness, there were many people to support me through this and in the end I was having so much fun with my friends that I almost forget about home! There are a lot of opportunities to keep in contact with family though, there are house computers and a house landline which can be used to contact members back home. Also most students do bring mobile phones in which they usually use to phone home. I found settling in to the lessons sometimes quite challenging as they were so different to my primary school, although over time this wasn’t even a problem anymore. Currently I am studying my AS Levels and therefore my typical day is slightly different to students lower down the school. Firstly in morning we have boarders breakfast and then a roll call in the house before heading over to school assembly. After this I have lessons all day, although now that I am in year 12 I do get free lessons which I either use to work, socialise in the Sixth Form Centre or in the boarding house. After school there are usually a range of activities on from sports practices to extra revision sessions. Personally I am very involved in tennis and so I attend a lot of the practices after school in the summer term. After these activities, in the boarding house there are scheduled times for the younger years to do their homework in silent conditions, although higher up the school we make our own schedules. After the prep times there is dinner for the boarders and then in the evening one is free to do what they like until their set bed times. In the evenings there is a range of things to do from watching TV to going to the onsite school gym. This may seem like a strict routine but when you are lower down the school this really enables you to learn how to organise your time efficiently which will really help in the future and also in the school Sixth Form. At the weekend the routine changes as there are no lessons taught. On a Saturday there are activities in the morning held at school from cookery to canoeing and in the afternoon many students are involved in sports matches or they have the chance to walk down to town to do some shopping. On Sunday the boarders can have more of a lazy day doing really what they like. Sometimes there are different school trips run by the teachers for the boarders. There are days out paintballing, shopping and also there is a even a day out to Alton Towers or Thorpe Park. Sadly I only have one more year left at Queens and therefore I am researchiing different universities to apply to at the moment. I feel that because I have been a boarder, Queens has really prepared me for going into the real world and being independent. As I have spent a long time away from home, living alone at university won’t even be a problem as I am already use to looking after myself. I definitely recommend Queens College to any child from outside of the UK as it has really helped me to become independent and set me up for the future. It will be hard first of all to leave home, but there is so much support from everyone around you here that it soon won’t even be a problem anymore.
