School Information

A supportive, friendly, day and boarding school
Founded in 1984, Rochester Independent College is a unique day and
boarding school in Kent. The majority of students are from the UK (70%)
with 30% from overseas. While there is an international flavour in our
comfortable on-campus accommodation, more than half of our boarders are
English. RIC is a real local school where the focus is on examination success
in a lively, supportive and informal atmosphere. There is no uniform, no bells
ring, students and staff are on first name terms and the average class size is
eight. We encourage our students to voice their opinions, to think critically,
creatively and independently. They leave with excellent examination results,
enthusiasm for the future and confidence in themselves and their education.
Rochester is in the top 2% in England for progress at A level according to
government league tables, and there are regular medical school placements
each year. Boarding at RIC combines the informality of a university hall
of residence with the supervision and pastoral support appropriate for
older teenagers. The emphasis is on providing a comfortable, happy, fun
environment. Our boarding staff live on site and are available 24/7 to
monitor and support students, helping with any concerns.

Academic rigour with a creative buzz
This successfully individual environment is a natural stepping-stone between
school and university. Our annual destinations list reflects the diversity of
our students and their enthusiasms. Recently students have proceeded to
courses including Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge; History of
Art at Edinburgh; Medicine at Aberdeen, Pharmacy at UCL, Dentistry at Bristol,
Fine Art at Kingston, Advertising at UAL, Law at York, Computer Science .

Rochester Independent College
at Nottingham, Veterinary Medicine at Royal Veterinary College, Fashion
Business at Manchester MET and Neuroscience at Glasgow.
Flexible programmes and wide subject choice
We offer over 40 subjects in a variety of programmes ranging from
conventional two year courses for GCSEs or A-levels to one year, combined
GCSE and A-level programmes and 5 term A-level courses. English language
support is available if required.

High-performing and non-selective
Because of the flexibility of our programmes, all students should attend
an interview either online or in person to fully explore their best options.
Academically non-selective, our main entry requirement is an honest
intention to work hard, and our students are consistently high-achieving.
Our minimum English language requirements are IELTS band 4.5 or higher in
speaking and writing for GCSE and band 5.0 or higher for A-level.
National winners of the ISA School of the Year for Excellence and
Innovation in Fine Arts.

“At RIC classes are relaxed and friendly, so you feel comfortable asking questions and for extra help if
you need it” – A-level student
