School Information

Founded in 1284, we are a high achieving, academic boarding school with
a long tradition of sending students to the best university destinations in
the UK and worldwide. Our students are supported to achieve their full
potential with kindness and positive encouragement.

Excellence in learning
We are proud of our long academic record of excellence. Teaching happens
in small groups (average of 9 students per A Level class, 12 at GCSE level)
and learning is tailored to the individual. 2023 saw excellent performance
at Advanced Level with 70 per cent of all grades awarded at A/A* and 90
per cent of all grades achieved were A*, A or B. Our results are consistently
the best of any independent school in north Wales.
At A Level we offer a full range of subjects with teaching that supports
students to perform to their best. Our Maths and Science provision is excellent
and many of our Ruthinians pursue university pathways in these areas.

Our vibrant school community
We value the partnership between school and family. For the examination
year groups, parents receive a weekly update from teachers so parents
are fully aware of their child’s ongoing progress. Student wellbeing and
safeguarding is of paramount importance and we have strong personal
relationships with our families.
Boarders receive a warm, Welsh welcome at Ruthin School and we make
every effort to help our international community feel at home. From the
food we serve to our students, to the sports and activities we do, we adapt
to meet the needs of the many nationalities on campus.

An Elective for everyone
Sports and activities Electives provide excellent breaks from study and
we have choices to suit everyone. There are teams in netball and football
and very popular teams in basketball, badminton, table tennis and other
sports. Some of the most popular activities are cooking lessons, chess and
arts and crafts.
We want our students to discover new talents as well as building upon
their existing interests. Our academic electives encourage stretch and
challenge such as Olympiads, Lego Robotics Competition, debating and
Model UN.
Situated on a beautiful, semi-rural campus in north Wales and a one
hour drive from the cities of Liverpool and Manchester, we have easy
access to the best UK tourist destinations for our extensive trips itinerary.
Our boarders get a full experience of the UK.

“We are committed to providing an education where students achieve excellent academic results
and develop the personal skills which are vital to a successful future.” – Head, Victoria Gamble
