School Information

Location
Based on the Isle of Wight just off the south coast of England (one of the
warmest locations in the UK), we pride ourselves on being an island school
with a global outlook. The importance of community sits at the heart
of our School and we expect pupils to be true to our values of ambition,
responsibility, courage and respect. Our pupils work hard and we challenge
them to make the most of their talents and the opportunities in front of them.
The main School is located in the historic Victorian town of Ryde with
its high-speed connections to mainland rail and air services to regional,
European and international destinations. Cowes, the home of international
sailing, is 30 minutes away.
Boarding is in two beautifully appointed boarding houses in the School
grounds in Ryde. Our Junior Boarding house, Millfield, for boys and girls in Years
6 to 10 and our Senior Boarding house, Centenary, for Year 11 and Sixth Form.

Academic and enrichment opportunities
Our exam results are strong and each year a good number of pupils achieve
the highest grades in all their exams. This leads to pupils achieving places at
top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and other leading institutions. Our
pupils apply for a broad range of courses such as maths, sciences, engineering,
medicine, law, humanities, languages, arts, design, music and performing arts.

Ryde School
We offer GCSE, A-level, International Baccalaureate and IELTS. We also offer a oneyear Pre Sixth Form course providing excellent preparation for entry into the Sixth
Form. Ryde School pupils benefit from an extensive range of excellent resources
helping them to reach their potential and achieve success in their chosen fields.
Life skills taught outside the classroom are also championed at Ryde. In addition
to the extensive academic, creative arts and sporting programme, the location of
our school enables us to offer a full extracurricular programme including the Duke
of Edinburgh’s Award and superb sailing opportunities. We recently opened a new
cookery school and performing arts centre.

Boarding
We have 80 boarding places in our Senior School out of 550 pupils. Boarders
come from all over the world and many from the UK. Pupils in years 6-10 join
Millfield House (22 pupils) which has a warm family feel to it. This smaller boarding
environment enables younger pupils to settle into school life well before they move
into Centenary House for years 11-13, which is larger and proves to be an excellent
preparation for university life. Unlike many other schools, boarders can remain on
campus during the half-term breaks and we do not have exeat weekends.

Scholarships and Bursaries

External awards

The School is able to provide a number of  Sports and General scholarships into Year 5 and Academic, Sports and General scholarships into Years 7, 9 and 12.These places are awarded to high quality candidates and are competitive following specific assessments. Scholarships open opportunities to bursaries which provide fee assistance and are means-tested with parents required to submit a financial declaration before the examination date. Places will be offered on a basis of performance in the assessments and at interview, the amount and number of the awards made being at the discretion of the Headmaster, operating within the guidelines set by the Board of Governors. Academic scholarships are offered for entry into Years 7,9 and the Lower Sixth Form(Year 12). External candidates for academic scholarships will sit examinations in November each year. We examine English and Mathematics and set a non-verbal reasoning test, with subject specific assessment for Sixth Form entry. For General Scholarships candidates will still need to demonstrate sound academic ability but the Headmaster will also take into account exceptional abilities in other areas of school life such as music, drama, art or design, as well as leadership potential. Sports scholars will demonstrate ability and potential in at least two sports, one of which must be a major Ryde School team sport. Shortlisted applicants for entry to Years 7 and 9 in Senior School may be invited back for interviews with the Headmaster and Heads of English and Mathematics at a mutually convenient time.

Internal awards

Academic scholarships may be awarded internally; to Junior School pupils on entry into Year 7 on the basis of the Summer term examination and the recommendation of the Head of Junior School and to pupils at the end of the Summer term in Year 9 on the basis of performance through the year and examination results. Each award will attract a small reduction in fees, which can continue through the pupil’s career, subject to sustained satisfactory performance. Scholarships are also awarded into the Lower Sixth Form (Year 12). Scholarship examinations and interviews for all Sixth Form applicants are arranged during a week in November and candidates have an opportunity to talk about chosen A Level/IB subjects with the Headmaster, Head of Sixth Form and/or IB Coordinator and Heads of Department as appropriate. The number of these awards may vary from year to year, depending on the academic profile of the cohorts involved.
