School Information

St Swithun’s School, Winchester is an ‘appropriately academic’ school which
means that we celebrate intellectual curiosity, but not to the exclusion of
all else. We expect our pupils to develop individual passions and through
them to acquire a range of skills and characteristics. These characteristics
will include a willingness to take risks, to question and to debate, and to
persevere in the face of difficulty. In the words of Samuel Beckett: ‘Ever tried.
Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.’

Caring for your daughter
We pride ourselves on the level of pastoral care we provide which includes
our award winning bespoke Positive Education course. Every girl belongs
both to a house and a form. She is in the joint care of her housemistress or
housemaster and her form tutor, who are supported by heads of year.
All boarding house staff live on site and ensure that full and weekly
boarders enjoy a community life to the full, with the right balance of study,
relaxation and challenge. Dedicated support is available to those girls for
whom English is not their first language.
We ensure that girls work together to forge supportive relationships with
other girls of all ages throughout the school. Together, the whole school
community provides a pastoral support framework which is finely attuned to
the needs of all pupils.

The benefits of boarding
Boarders at St Swithun’s very often say that boarding is their favourite thing
about school. They like being with their friends, having time to take part in
lots of activities, being part of a community and being able to roll out of bed
into school via breakfast.
We offer both weekly and full boarding options. Weekly boarding is
perfect for many busy families, allowing the girls to take part in a wide range
of activities and do most of their homework at school during the week,
and have the weekend with their families. We offer a range of activities
at weekends, but full boarders are also allowed to stay with friends or
relatives if they wish. We believe that boarding has many advantages, not
least of which is learning about the tolerance, compromise, kindness and
responsibility so necessary when living in a community.

Visiting us
We run individual visits as well as open days for parents considering
