School Information

Located in the heart of the beautiful cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, King’s
Ely is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school, situated just
15 minutes from Cambridge and one hour from London, with direct rail links to
both. As one of the oldest schools in the country, King’s Ely nurtures the academic
and pastoral needs of around 1,000 pupils from the age of 2 through to 18.
King’s Ely stands in the shadow of the magnificent Ely Cathedral, which makes
the perfect setting for concerts and performances, and serves as our school
chapel. But it is not just our awe-inspiring environment that makes us unique. So
too does our innovative approach to teaching and learning, our extensive extracurricular programme, our outstanding pastoral care, and our quirky, historic
traditions! As such, we are proud to have received an ‘excellent’ rating in all areas
following our latest ISI Inspection, recognising the highest levels of pastoral care,
academic rigour, and opportunities outside the classroom.

Our students are renowned for their energy, their courage, and their
integrity. The progress that they make from the start to the end of their
King’s Ely journey is astounding and accounts for our high placement in local
and national added-value rankings, including the top five in Cambridgeshire.
Whether a student shines in a classroom, in a laboratory, on a stage, on a pitch,
or on a mountainside, we promise an abundance of opportunity for personal
development, both academically and socially.

Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are the hallmark of every section
of King’s Ely. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, pupils develop the selfknowledge and resilience to face the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Every year, our students secure places at their first-choice universities, including Oxford
and Cambridge. However, our aim is for students to develop learning habits that
successfully prepare them for life, not just exams. As reported in the Good Schools
Guide, we “turn out well-rounded, likeable individuals who attain academically but
who also realise there is more to life than just results.”

Music, Drama and Theatre, Art, Fashion and Textiles, Photography and Dance
are each embedded in the culture of King’s Ely, with vast opportunities for pupils of
all aspirations. All major sports are offered, along with an impressive array of other
activities, helping every pupil to realise their sporting potential. Rowing, athletics,
golf, cricket, hockey, tennis, rugby, netball, equestrian and football – the choices
are endless. Our Boat Club is located just a short walk from school, providing an
uninterrupted stretch of water that runs for over 15 miles in each direction.
From the high peaks of the Himalayas to the gushing torrents of the rivers in
the Alps, our unique Ely Scheme Programme also offers boundless opportunities
for pupils to learn through outdoor education. We give students the chance to
undertake their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at all three levels. The range of clubs
and activities on offer to pupils, both during and after school, is vast. Pre-Prep
children enjoy things like Forest School and Engineering Club; Junior children
enjoy clubs like Archery and Pottery, and Senior pupils enjoy clubs like Clay Pigeon
Shooting and Language Leaders. There really is something for everyone.
King’s Ely is more than a school. We are a community, a family. We take
each child on a seamless journey, travelling from one section to the next,
whilst welcoming newcomers at key transition stages, giving support and
adapting the offering to the needs of every child in our care. With over 45
nationalities represented at King’s Ely, students enjoy their schooldays in the
company of friends from a range of cultures and backgrounds.

“Our daughter, Neha, joined King’s Ely as an American expat from a school in another European country. King’s Ely provided a nurturing environment of learning, while still challenging and setting expectations that motivated Neha to engage in extra-curricular activities, to work hard academically, and to develop a self-awareness that would prepare her for the wider world. Neha became Head of House, earned a Prefect title, developed life-long friendships with her peers, and rounded off her final year with A grades. For Neha, King’s Ely truly was home for three years.” – Mr and Mrs Son
