Student Profile

Trent College pupil Daniel Tong joined Homerton College, Cambridge after spending five successful years at Trent College. “I chose to join Trent College in Year 9 because after looking at three schools I found Trent to be the friendliest and also to have a good location in the UK. “I’ve grown in confidence since I have been here - taking part in new activities and living in the boarding house has really helped with this. Since joining Trent I have also enjoyed new hobbies. I joined the school’s RAF Air Cadets, as part of this I won an RAF Air Cadet scholarship during Year 11 which included training to fly gliders. I have also learnt how to play the drums and I am now already at Grade 7 level. I hope to continue with these activities in the future.” In the summer of 2014 Daniel achieved almost all A*s in his GCSEs (with an A in English and a B in Economics). He is now studying Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Economics at A-level. “I have done very well in my studies and university applications and the School has really helped me with this; boarding life has provided structure and helped with my organisation, I have had specialist teacher support with interview practise, writing my application to Oxbridge and in preparing for exams.” Oxbridge Co-ordinator Dr Helen Johnson is very proud of Daniel: “It is fantastic to see all of Daniel’s hard work rewarded with a Cambridge offer. He worked incredibly hard both in and outside of the Oxbridge programme to prepare for his application and interview and it is thoroughly deserved. He has also been a key member of the Trent College debating society and has represented the school very successfully at several competitions. He should be proud of all his success.” Mr Guy Hope, Head of Shuker Boarding House, reflects on Daniel’s time at Trent: “It has been wonderful to see how Daniel has grown during his time with us. He was quiet at first, but has now truly blossomed into a confident young man who is able to hold a good conversation with both adults and his peers. He has excelled in his maths studies and all in the boarding house are proud of his Oxbridge offer. It is fantastic to see him contributing to the boarding community, particularly by acting as a mentor to younger students and even helping fellow Sixth Formers with their maths!” The final word goes to Daniel. “For any student considering studying at Trent College, I would say that you need to come with the attitude to work hard and to be confident… you will fit in and make friends.”
