School Information

The School
Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty in southwest England, 50
miles from Bristol International Airport and 2½ hours’ journey from Heathrow,
Wellington is a leading co-educational day and boarding school with over
180 students in its sixth form. The realistic fees, superb facilities and excellent
academic results (2021: A LEVEL A*- C 90%, 2021: GCSE 9-4 (A*- C) 97%),
combined with top university entrance, have ensured its continuing popularity.

Curriculum and facilities
Wellington offers a broad and balanced education with a wide range of GCSE,
IGCSE, A-level and BTEC subjects. Wellington also offers a one-year GCSE
course for up to 16 international students. Considerable emphasis is placed
on outdoor activities (including Army, Navy and RAF Combined Cadet Force)
and on sport, enhanced by the £2m Princess Royal Sports Complex. There are
extensive playing fields, a floodlit Astro Turf pitch, an indoor swimming pool
and an indoor and outdoor climbing wall.
Music and drama flourish and the School has extensive facilities including a
music school, drama studio and theatre.

Sixth Form
A sixth form of nearly 200 students ensures that this is a significant group
within the School community. Progress in the Sixth Form is monitored
constantly by tutors so that every student can achieve his or her personal
best at A-level. Sound career and university advice is on hand and the School
endeavours to ensure that these final two school years prepare the students
thoroughly and successfully for their adult life.

Boarding
The five boarding houses are modern and comfortable and the experienced
housestaff provide a warm and supportive environment with a homely
atmosphere. Sixth-formers have spacious study-bedrooms and their own
common rooms within the boarding houses. Around 12% of the students
are from overseas, and the boarders, and indeed the whole School, benefit
from this varied international community. Entry is by entrance examination
depending on age.
And finally…
The educational philosophy at Wellington School is based on three key pillars:
• The Pursuit of Excellence
• Love of Learning
• Outstanding Relationships
We are the ideal school for academically ambitious pupils who want to get
involved and we pride ourselves on equipping children with all they need
to thrive.
Traditional values of hard work, good behaviour and unpretentious
manners are held in high esteem, complemented by the total commitment
of every member of staff to the individual.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships We offer a number of academic scholarships each year for those entering Years 7and 9. These consist of fee remissions of between 10% and 50%. All those awarded an academic scholarship for Year 7 have the opportunity to apply for a means-tested bursary to supplement the scholarship up to a maximum of 100% depending on the level of need. All day and boarding candidates who take the entrance exam in the January are automatically considered for scholarship. The entrance exam for Year 7 entry in the following September is usually held in early January. There are also a number of all-rounder scholarships for entry into Years 7 and 9 based on academic performance and talent and potential in two of the following areas – academic, drama, music, sport, art and design. Year 7 all-rounder awards may be supplemented by means-tested bursaries. The Year 9 academic and all-rounder scholarship days are usually held in late February. Music Exhibitions Music scholarships are awarded for entry into both Year 7 and Year 9 and above. In addition, a number of music exhibitions, which are open to all ages, are awarded each year and these consist of free tuition on one or more instruments while the pupil remains at the school.
