School Information

Ipswich School is a top ten school in East Anglia (Sunday Times Parent Power).
Founded circa 1399 it has a longstanding educational heritage and is the only
school to be mentioned in one of Shakespeare’s plays. Our students achieve
excellent examination results and progress to top Russell group universities. But,
whilst our academic results are consistently outstanding, this is anything but an
‘academic hothouse’. This is a happy, supportive and busy school where students
develop intellectual curiosity, a spirit of service and lifelong friendships.
We provide a boutique boarding experience within an outstanding British coeducational independent school.

Boarding facilities
We have two small boarding houses: Westwood and Anglesea Heights.
Westwood boarding house is a Victorian mansion set in wooded grounds,
just a 5 minute walk from the main school site. This houses our Year 9 – 12
boarders, girls and boys. Anglesea Heights is set in historic grounds in the
centre of Ipswich. Shared facilities in the Sixth Form Boarding House include a
warm and welcoming lounge, TV room, kitchen, IT suites and music rooms. All
rooms in Anglesea have en-suite toilet and shower facilities.
The majority of our boarding students come from overseas but we also have
a growing number of UK boarding students and overall the significant majority
of students are British pupils. We are located near the heritage Suffolk coast
within an hour of London Stansted. All boarders benefit from a friendly, homefrom-home experience combined with the best of British schooling.

Excellent results
Ipswich School has a strong and consistent academic reputation. Students
achieve excellent examination results and progress to the best universities,
including Oxbridge and top Russell Group. In 2023, 39% achieved Grades

Ipswich School
9-8 and 63% achieved Grades 9-7 in our biggest ever GCSE cohort of 143
students. A Level results were 48% A*-A and 80% A*-B again, with the
school’s biggest ever A Level cohort of 151 students.
Whilst academically successful, the school provides significant value added
and participation is high across music, drama and sport. Tutors keep a close eye
on each individual student to ensure that they balance their activities and are
happy and fulfilled. EAL tuition is included in the curriculum for international
students which covers language lessons, help with their studies more generally
and fun activities such as EAL Book Club – Harry Potter is always a popular
choice! Our IELTS tuition is excellent and we have a 100% pass rate.

Curriculum and co-curricular activities
Teaching is outstanding and students are supported and stretched to realise
their full potential. Learning is enhanced with our life skills and co-curricular
programme, with excellent music, sport and drama provision in particular.
With 60 acres of playing fields and an all weather pitch at the boarding
house there is plenty of sport on offer. Sixth Form students take part in The
Edge, which includes a Level 3 qualification in Leadership and Management,
and a week away at an outdoors study centre in South Devon.

“As pupils move through the school, their confidence increases, nurtured by excellent welfare and
pastoral support. Pupils are reflective and resilient, whether settling in as new boarders or managing the emotional aspects of forming new friendships.” – ISI Inspection Report 2022
