School Information

Friendly atmosphere in a beautiful location
Founded in 1896, the College sits within an attractive 14-acre site
overlooking the South Bay of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The College
has a warm, friendly and caring ambience which is frequently commented
upon by visitors. This environment enables our boys and girls to flourish
personally and academically. There is good access to the cities of York,
Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Hull, with Manchester and Leeds
Bradford airports being close by. The school, which specialises in boarding for
students aged 11 to 18, provides a safe environment aimed at encouraging
independence.

Outstanding pastoral care
Scarborough College places high value on pastoral care and support for every
child. Children in the Prep School are closely monitored by their class
teacher, whilst pupils in the Senior School benefit from the guidance of
their form tutor who sensitively oversees their social development as well
as academic progress. For those children who find aspects of learning more
challenging, the school has a special educational needs coordinator. All the
way through the school, students receive individual support and care to
ensure they are happy, motivated and achieving their best. Senior students
continue to receive close individual support, and staff and students work
together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation.

Broad curriculum
The school has a strong reputation for offering a broad and stimulating
education. Underpinned by traditional principles, the school has always
championed innovation, which led it to be one of the first schools in North
Yorkshire to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB). The school is
currently the top-performing IB school in the North East of England. At
the school’s heart are the traditional disciplines of English, mathematics,
science and modern foreign languages. In Year 10, these subjects form the
‘core’ at GCSE, leaving room for three or four ‘option’ subjects. Extra English
language tuition is given, where necessary, to international students. Sixth
Form students study the IB, which is an exciting two-year course of study
that prepares students for life after school and university. The IB offers a
comprehensive and balanced qualification that is recognised throughout the
world. Using the Enrichment Programme (EP) which operates outside lesson
times, pupils are encouraged to develop a broad range of interests. We
ensure there is something for everyone including sport, music, drama and
other activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In total there are
over 65 different sports, activities, clubs and societies available for pupils
throughout the year. In addition, all of our Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils take part
in our innovative weekly programme called ‘Yorkshire Grit’. This includes
character building activities such as sailing, paddle boarding, raft building,
rock climbing, scuba diving to name just a few alongside mindfulness and
well-being sessions. A programme which helps to ensure a well-rounded
education for every student on top of the academic rigour which the school
provides and supports on an individual basis.

Registered charity

Student Profile

A Day in the Life of… Boarding at Scarborough College by Maximillian Guhr I get up in the boarding house at 7am and go up for breakfast at 8am in the school canteen where all the boarders have breakfast, after which I go to the study centre and wait for registration at 8.30am. On Mondays and Fridays we have an assembly and on the other days we go straight to lessons. A typical day would be Biology, German and then Economics (40 minutes each) and then a break of 20 minutes. I then have a double free period which I spend studying, researching and revising in the study centre. If I want to chat to friends I can go and meet them in the 6th form Costa café area. Lunch is at 1.10pm and then I tend to go to the 6th form common room after lunch to play some pool and see my friends. Afternoon lessons are double English, free period then Geography. Directly after lessons I go to my Enrichment Programme activity. I do different activities on different days – one day I do Production. Last year I was in the Technics group for the school production of ‘The King & I’, learning how to manage lighting, sound and stage management. This term I’m helping out with Year 9 and 10 beginners’ Italian classes, as my Mum is Italian so I’m fluent in it! Enrichment normally lasts until tea time at 5.30pm where all boarders go to the canteen to eat tea. We come back to the boarding house by 6pm and get ready to have a house meeting at 6.15pm which is run by the duty housemaster. We get notices, plan trips and can raise any issues about life in the boarding house. If we need to contact an adult at any time (say if we’re sick) then we have houseparents who live in the house with us, so they are always there if we need them, but mostly it’s a place where we can be quite independent, which prepares you well for university life. Between 6.30 – 8pm we have prep time where I study, revise and complete my homework in my bedroom. Younger students complete their prep in the computer room. At 8pm we have free time and there are always lots of things to do. I quite often go with a couple of friends to the gym which is close by – boarders get free membership. We can also play basketball there, or sometimes a few of us will go down to Willersley House to socialise with the girls. In good weather we play rugby, football or handball out in the garden at Weaponness. We can help ourselves to food in the kitchens at the house on an evening, too, and each person takes it in turns to do a kitchen duty. We have a laundry day each week where we send our bedding and clothes to be washed and get it back the next day. Around the house we can just hang out with friends, play piano and sing, play pool and watch TV. I go to bed between 10-11pm. I would recommend boarding to anyone – it’s quite a structured life and your friends are like your family.
